Waitingby Ha Jin Our Price: $24.00
Ha Jin's WAITING (Pantheon Books) has been selected by judges Andrea Barrett, Nicholas Delbanco, and Reginald McKnight as the
winner of the 2000 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. The announcement of the 20th recipient of the nationwide literary award was made today by the directors of the
PEN/Faulkner Foundation, Robert Stone, Chairman.
The judges considered more than 250 novels and short story collections published
in the United States during the 1999 calendar year by 93 publishing houses,
including small and academic presses.
Ha Jin's second novel, WAITING also won this year's National Book Award. The narrative traces Lin Kong's 18-year struggle to free himself from an arranged marriage and marry the woman he loves, while living in a society designed to regulate his every move. WAITING is also a penetrating portrait of contemporary China. Ha Jin left his native China in 1985. He is a professor of English at Emory University, and lives near Atlanta.
