Overview

If the only way to address the global population crisis and degradation of the planet was to limit everyone's lifespan to 70 years, would you go along with it? Or would you fight to live? This is the dilemma faced by Claris, the narrator of The Collections. Her beloved husband has been taken to a Collections Depot to be euthanised, and his body mulched to feed reforestation, and soon it will be her turn. Should Claris abide by the law, or should she break it?
It's 2041. The population bomb has exploded. The climate is in crisis. Only extreme measures will save our species and, in an attempt to restore balance, the Government has legalized Collections. It's unimaginable but understandable. Is it avoidable? Claris works in a government Collections Depot but after her husband is taken there to die - a sacrifice he makes willingly to help reduce population pressure - she finds her job increasingly abhorrent. Plagued by unease, she tries to reconcile her morals with reality.

About the Author

New Zealand author Patricia Donovan explores the human condition with wit and a sharp insight. While her novels are, ultimately, about what drives her characters, and what happens to them, the initial idea – what starts her writing – always comes from circumstance, a situation of some sort, such as societal derision, or bullying, or repressive governance. This situation is what creates the moral or emotional dilemma her characters find themselves in. Without this dilemma, Donovan says, there is nothing for them to respond to.
While Donovan’s novels so far have crossed three genres – from the past to the future with a thriller in between – she is always writing about the same thing: a woman’s journey and her quest, in the face of obstacles, to find her strengths and happiness and make her way in the world.
Patricia Donovan grew up in Christchurch and attended the University of Canterbury where she earned an MA (Hons) in English Literature. She is a member of the New Zealand Society of Authors and of the New Zealand Writers Guild.
