Frank McCourt (1930-2009) turned his poverty-stricken upbringing in Brooklyn, New York and Limerick, Ireland into his tragic memoir Angela’s Ashes, which was later adapted into a movie. He followed Angela’s Ashes with ’Tis and Teacher Man, both memoirs detailing different time periods in his life. In 2009, the New York City Department of Education founded the Frank L. McCourt High School of Writing, Journalism, and Literature in his honor.
