Amos Decker, who made his debut in Memory Man, and is now settling in to his new job at the FBI, becomes interested in the Melvin Mars case after reading about it online. After spending the last 20 years in prison for killing his parents, convicted murderer Melvin Mars suddenly learns that he will be released. Another man has unexpectedly confessed to the crime. But was the man's confession false? Is Melvin the true killer? Decker is struck initially by the similarities to his own case and begins investigating in his spare time. But as he digs deeper, he realizes that the case is much more complex than it first appeared.
