Brothers Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm were born in 1785 and 1786, respectively, in Hanau, then part of the Holy Roman Empire, but now part of Germany. In 1812, they published Kinder- und Hausmärchen, or Children's- and Household Tales, from which this English edition was translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes. This edition has been lightly edited for clarity.
