Description: This book, written in primer form by a nurse specialist in oncology, is a drastic distillation of pharmacological data for the many medications that could conceivably be used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients.
Purpose: Its purpose is to provide rapid access to medication information used commonly in HIV/AIDS related illnesses; in effect, this represents a very broad spectrum of drugs used for the myriad of complex infectious and metabolic diseases. The latter spectrum is so vast that this primer actually approaches internal medicine revisited!
Audience: This book would only be relevant for nurses and possibly some paramedical personnel (hospice care workers). Its paucity of discussion alternatives and differential diagnoses makes it unsuitable for medical students and residents. Practicing physicians, if they need to refer to this primer, should not be taking care of HIV/AIDS patients.
Features: There are no unique features to the text.
Assessment: I understand the author's frustration and admire her effort to provide an encyclopedic overview of AIDS pharmacology in pertinent primer form to provide relevant data for the care of AIDS patients. This is an excellent source for nurses who are extensively involved with HIV/AIDS patients; but I would not recommend it to any other audience.
