Description: Small enough to fit comfortably in a pocket of a white coat, this phrasebook provides Spanish translations of questions that are commonly asked of diabetic patients in many clinical situations. It is not meant to be comprehensive, nor is it meant to replace a Spanish translator.
Purpose: It is intended to help physicians communicate with Spanish-speaking patients when the need for care is critical, but a translator is not available. This is an important objective. The book aims to provide translations for many questions that comprise a history and examination of patients with diabetes. The questions are constructed primarily to provide yes/no or simple answers to ease communication.
Audience: The phrasebook is designed for physicians, nurses, and other clinicians who take care of diabetic patients in emergency rooms, urgent care centers, or other clinical situations where a Spanish translator is hard to find or not available. The book is particularly suitable for endocrinologists, internists, and emergency room physicians, but will be important for anyone who takes care of Spanish-speaking diabetic patients (but who does not speak the language fluently). It is not meant to replace a translator, nor does it do so. But it is an excellent resource.
Features: Organized by topic, the book starts with greetings and introductions, moves to medications/allergies, chief complaint, past medical history, and numerous other topics. Thus, it can occasionally be difficult to find a particular phrase one has in mind, but to include a full index would have made the book too large for its purpose. Also, it should be kept in mind that the book specifically targets diabetic issues, and is not meant to be a full Spanish medical phrasebook.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for those who take care of Spanish-speaking diabetic patients. Clearly, translators are not always available in the timeframe that clinical care sometimes requires. This phrasebook provides translations for many key questions that comprise the evaluation of the diabetic patient, and it is small enough to be carried at all times. The American Diabetes Association has provided a very useful service by developing this book.
