When an excerpt of Mad About The Boy, Helen Fielding’s third installment in the Bridget Jones series, was released on Sunday, fans were in for a shock. In it, Mark Darcy is dead, and Bridget is a 51-year-old widow with two children. (The last we saw the barrister, he was proposing to Bridget. We didn’t even get a wedding.) If Fielding was hoping to create a buzz around the book, she’s succeeded—the internet is currently in mourning over the news. People are swearing off Helen Fielding and the book in general, and it has even been suggested that Bridget should have been killed off instead.
In many ways, Mad About the Boy Bridget is very much the one we’ve grown to love, though now she tweets! And Twitter, where her fans have come to mourn, is also where she meets her 30-year-old “toy boy boyfriend” Roxter five years after Mr. Darcy has died.
The news comes not as a spoiler alert (Darcy dies before Mad About The Boy even begins), but more as a warning to those who would be shocked beyond belief were they to receive the news without some sort of buffer. And since there is still some unknown information surrounding Darcy’s death, it will be worth picking up the book on October 10. Below, Twitter reacts:
#MarkDarcy no man ever wore a christmas jumper like he did and no one ever will…

I mean, why Mark Darcy? Why couldn’t it have been Daniel Cleaver instead? Like…to some sort of exotic sexual disease. #BridgetJones

I don’t want to live in a world where Mark Darcy and Bridget Jones aren’t living happily ever after. Too far, Helen Fielding. Too far. — purpleclaire (@purpleclaire) September 29, 2013
Finding out Mark Darcy is dead in the third Bridget Jones film has already turned my day into the worst ever

Mark Darcy dying in the last Bridget Jones book is just the most depressing foreshadowing of my life.

RIP Mark Darcy. But we can still get Colin Firth for the flashbacks, right? #bridgetsback

Clearly the real reason this news is so devastating:
helen fielding killing off #MarkDarcy in the next bridget book means no more colin firth in the films. so sad.

But if you’re interested in staying grounded in reality, remember that:
Ladies. Please. Bridget Jones isn’t real and Colin Firth is still alive. #BridgetJones

Will you read Mad About The Boy? Or are you too gutted by the news? How do you think Darcy dies?
