Overview

Do you sometimes look at your best friend, or a colleague at work, and wonder how what you just said got so misconstrued? If that happens to you, then we recommend you read The Art of Dialogue: Exploring Personality Differences for More Effective Communication. Although ideas of psychological type and personality differences have been around for more than a century, many people dont know that some of the basic misunderstandings we have with one another come about because of these differences. People dont perceive things in the same way, or make decisions using the same criteria.

The premise behind the Art of Dialogue is that the lenses through which people see the world have impact on how they communicate. For over twenty years, the author, an expert on psychological type, recorded countless conversations between people of varying types with the intent to use these conversations as a model for improving communication. This book presents the reader with the fundamentals of psychological type, followed by an analysis of the dialogues, and gives a summary of words that often take on different meanings for different types.

This is an excellent introductory book for building understanding of different communication styles. It uses the framework of the sixteen psychological types, as most frequently determined and described by the well known Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument. With that said, it is not necessary to know anything about psychological type before reading this book. And when you do read it, you will discover quite a lot about yourself and others, improving the way you communicate along the way.
