Best known as the Titfield Thunderbolt, Lion is the only surviving locomotive from the pioneering Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Built in Leeds in 1838 by Todd, Kitson & Laird, Lion and her sisters were constructed to two patents – those of Robert Stephenson (1834) and the Liverpool & Manchester's own John Melling (1837).This book explores the design of Lion, her nineteen year working life on the Liverpool & Manchester, and her rescue and life in preservation, including her numerous film roles.

About the Author

Anthony Dawson has a lifetime’s interest in railways; he is a graduate both of the University of Bradford (B.Sc hons, archaeology) and the University of Leeds (M.Res, history). Anthony is a member of staff at the Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester, where he puts his enthusiasm for early railways into practice as a Railway Volunteer on the replica Planet locomotive.
