About the Author

Jack Ganssle has 30 years' experience developing embedded systems. He has authored two books, The Art of Programming Embedded Systems and The Art of Designing Embedded Systems, and writes a regular column in Embedded Systems Programming magazine. Michael Barr is the editor-in-chief of Embedded Systems Programming magazine and the principal of Netrino Consultants Network. He wrote Programming Embedded Systems in C and C++.

A dictionary designed just for people interested in embedded systems, this outstanding book does justice to its name. Each term is thoroughly defined in easy-to-read text. Where needed, a term may be accompanied by a picture, diagram, table, or schematic to help illustrate the definition. You can't beat this dictionary for clear elucidation of the terminology you need to have at your fingertips in studying or working in the embedded systems field.
Authors Jack Ganssle and Michael Barr begin each definition by using a part-of-speech key (e.g., abbr.: abbreviation or acronym; adj.: adjective; etc.) and, where its not obvious, indicate standard pronunciation. The first sentence of each entry is a concise statement of the term's meaning. The authors follow with any abbreviations, alternative terms or -- in the case of an acronym, for example -- expansions. Definitions of key terms are almost encyclopedic in their length, and many others include helpful diagrams, schematics, figures, equations, and code listings. There are even tips for further reading where appropriate sources exist. And everything is cross-referenced to the nth degree.
Anyone who must be knowledgeable about embedded systems will find this excellent dictionary a gold mine full of useful information. For the sales and marketing folks and managers, this dictionary may be all that they really need. On the other hand, for engineers and technical writers, far more depth follows.
