This third edition textbook is divided into two parts: central concepts related to cells and tissues, and pathophysiologic alterations. Part one gives an in-depth view of cells, genes and common genetic diseases, cell injury, fluid and electrolytes and acid-base balance, immunity, inflammation and wound healing, coping and illness, and oncogenesis. Part two gives a systematic survey of diseases within the systems that includes epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment modalities. The purpose is to provide an in-depth and current understanding of disease processes across the life span; to link relevant modern biology to a disease state; describe gender differences related to epidemiology and pathophysiology; and to integrate health promotion and disease prevention. Risk factors and nutrition are incorporated. The book is useful for practicing nurses and students in pathophysiology courses. The overall design is very logical. The first section provides a framework for understanding broad concepts such as genetics, cell injury, immunity, and inflammation. The second section examines normal anatomy and physiology, which serve as a basis for understanding common pathophysiology of adults and children. A new feature is "What's New Boxes," which present easy to understand updates in research. This textbook has always been an excellent resource and this new edition adds full color illustrations. There are algorithms that summarize important physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Students often indicate that these provide a quick means for review. Full-color photographs of clinical manifestations, specimens, and clinical imaging techniques add tothe text. Case studies are strategically included for each chapter dealing with disease states. New sections on headaches, neurobiology of selected psychiatric conditions, an integrated chapter on multiple interacting systems, and new illustrations make this text even better than previous editions.

Description: This sixth edition of a pathophysiology textbook includes more than 300 new full-color illustrations and photographs as well as major revisions, updated content, and reorganized data in many of the chapters. New information is provided on esophagitis and esophageal reflux, inherited disorders of the renal system, neuroregulation of hormone responses and hormonal immune system interaction, pain modulation, chronic pain syndromes, and classification of sleep disorders.
Purpose: The authors explore the ways in which the various cells, tissues, and organs suffer within the human body, providing a comprehensive overview of pathophysiology. The authors hope readers will realize that the conceptual models used in the book relate not only to the suffering of cells, tissues, and organ systems but also of human beings — there is a person on the receiving end of all that suffering or pathology. The revisions in this edition make it a valuable and comprehensive resource.
Audience: Although not specifically stated, the book is designed for college-level healthcare programs, but anyone interested in the pathophysiology of the human body would benefit from reading this well-written and logically organized book.
Features: The book is organized into two parts. Part one covers the central concepts of pathophysiology of cells and tissues or the cellular environment. The 13 chapters in this part cover cellular biology, altered cellular and tissue biology, the cellular environment, genes and genetic diseases, immunity, infection and cancer. Part two deals with the suffering or pathophysiology within each organ system and the interaction that can occur with multiple organ system failure. Each organ system is easily identifiable by the index color coding at the top of the fore edge of the page. There are 11 units in this part, made up of chapters 14-46. Each organ system discussion includes the male and female anatomy of the system if there are differences, alterations in those systems, and alterations specific for children. The book includes numerous full color artist conceptions, color and black-and-white photographs, tables, figures, a 22-page glossary and hypertext links to online resources. The online resource provides a more comprehensive glossary and multimedia content.
Assessment: This updated edition is well written and logically organized and can go toe-to-toe with any other pathophysiology textbook. This is an excellent choice for healthcare students and would provide a worthy resource for public, college, and university libraries as well.
