Description: This book covers major pediatric subspecialties and includes a thorough review including pathophysiology, physical presentation, as well as clear images and tables to better define the topics. The book includes an ebook with photo galleries and videos of developmental, neurologic, and surgical findings. In addition, the book includes a highlight and note feature to mark or add comments to any online section. The previous edition of this book (7th) was published in 2017.
Purpose: From the introductory material, the purpose of this book is to provide a broad overview of pediatric diagnoses, along with their physical presentations to allow practitioners to better recognize and manage pediatric conditions. Because medicine relies so heavily on clinical practice and evaluation, the objective of the book to provide the visual aspect of pediatrics is very much needed for the field. Notes and highlighting features online, while helpful, may be more passive forms of learning. These certainly add value, however. Overall, this book meets the stated objectives.
Audience: The atlas, from a reviewer perspective, targets general pediatric practitioners, pediatric residents, and upper-level medical students. While the book is very thorough, the material becomes dense at times. The tables and figures often help to present the information in a more digestible format. Because of the target audience and the amount of information, a more active form, such as an end-of-section review or online quiz, may be useful. The authors are credible authorities as medical doctors and pediatrics professors with experience writing previous editions of this text.
Features: The best aspects of this book include straightforward diagnoses and descriptions often accompanied by figures or tables to better present the topic. Most disorders are accompanied by images of phenotypes in a diverse range of children including race and age. The organization of the material is clear, particularly in the online version where transitioning to various sections is simple. The sketches of vasculature and the chest cavity alongside chest x-rays in the cardiology section were particularly unique. All information in the physical book is also provided in the ebook. While most sections involving diagnoses affecting the skin provide diversity, I was surprised by the lack of representation for more common or more concerning skin disorders in the dermatology section. It seemed only certain conditions provided this range.
Assessment: For pediatric residents, this book is of good quality; however, realistically, it is very heavy and difficult to transport. The online version offers a great alternative and makes bookmarking and note taking easy.
