Overview

A knowledge-based system (KBS) is a system that uses artificial intelligence techniques in problem-solving processes to support human decision-making, learning, and action. Ideal for advanced-undergraduate and graduate students, as well as business professionals, this text is designed to help users develop an appreciation of KBS and their architecture and understand a broad variety of knowledge-based techniques for decision support and planning. It assumes basic computer science skills and a math background that includes set theory, relations, elementary probability, and introductory concepts of artificial intelligence. Each of the 12 chapters is designed to be modular, providing instructors with the flexibility to model the book to their own course needs. Exercises are incorporated throughout the text to highlight certain aspects of the material presented and to simulate thought and discussion. A comprehensive text and resource, Knowledge-Based Systems provides access to the most current information in KBS and new artificial intelligences, as well as neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, and soft systems.

About the Author

Rajendra Akerkar is the Founder Chairman of the Technomathematics Research Foundation, India. He is also a Senior Scientist at the Western Norway Research Institute, Norway. He received the BOYSCAST (Young Scientist) award of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India in 1997, and was the recipient of the prestigious DAAD fellowship and UNESCO-TWAS Associate in mathematical sciences. Rajendra Akerkar's research and teaching assignments have taken him around the world to Germany, Japan, Norway, Austria, Canada, Vietnam, Spain and Armenia. He is also member of IASTED Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems. He is a life member of the Indian Science Congress and the Indian Mathematical Society. Akerkar serves as editor-in-chief of International Journal of Computer Science & Applications and Journal of Hybrid Computing Research, and is on the editorial board of numerous other computer science journals. More than 80 of Akerkar's research papers have been published in reputed national and international journals and he has authored 9 books and edited 4 volumes of international conferences on Artificial Intelligence & Applications of Computer Algebra. His research agenda basically concentrates on learning and natural language - how each works in the human and how they can be replicated in a machine. His area of interest broadly includes intelligent systems, semi structured data, Web data mining, and semantic web.

Priti Srinivas Sajja joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science, Sardar Patel University, India in 1994 and presently working as a Reader. Her research interests include knowledge-based systems, soft computing, multi-agent systems, semantic web and software engineering. She has 37 publications in journals and in the proceedings of national and international conferences. Two of her publications have won best research paper awards. She is member in editorial board of four international science journals based at USA and Brazil and served as program committee member for many international conferences.
