About the Author

D. Richard Laws, PhD, until his death in 2020, was Director of Pacific Behavioural Assessment in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He was a past president of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers. He held adjunct faculty positions at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom and at the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, and was Honourary Professor at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Dr. Laws was known in the field of sexual deviation as a developer of assessment procedures and behavior therapies.

William T. O’Donohue, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist in Nevada, has been a full Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno, since 1999. Dr. O’Donohue is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and has served on the board of directors of this organization. Since 1996, he has received over $1.5 million in federal grant monies from sources including the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Justice. He has edited over 30 books, coauthored three books, and published more than 100 articles in scholarly journals.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide "the up-to-date information needed to understand, evaluate, and treat people with these challenging disorders."
Audience: The intended audience includes psychiatrists, social workers, and students in these fields, as well as sex offender treatment specialists, sex therapists, and human sexuality researchers. Legal professionals may also find it of use. Dr. Laws has been practicing in the area of sexual behavior for nearly 40 years and has published extensively and served on different editorial boards. Dr. O'Donohue is a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Nevada and has published extensively and conducted research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Justice. The contributors represent an international authorship from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand.
Features: The book covers theory, lifespan issues, and 12 specific sexual disorders, discussing the psychopathology, theory, assessment, and treatment of each one. The chapters on specific sexual disorders are fairly uniform, addressing prevalence, risk, comorbidity, theory, summary, and future directions, as well as assessment and treatment issues. The chapter on sexual deviance and the law presents the standards of practice for mental health professionals along with case illustrations. A discussion of both neurobiological processes and medical models and interventions ends the book. This book is comprehensive, covering DSM-IV-TR sexual disorders in addition to online sex offending. Well written with instructive tables and figures, it presents updated research since the first edition. More clinical examples would have been welcome.
Assessment: This would be a wonderful addition to anyone's library, especially mental health professionals who work with individuals dealing with sexual behavior problems on a regular basis. It contains information on many disorders and addresses both theoretical and treatment issues, incorporating research into practice. The second edition is needed because important research has added information about etiology of sexual deviance, lifespan issues, online sexual offending, and sexual deviance in females, for example.
