Catholic Traditions and Treasures: An Illustrated Encyclopedia
New converts and cradle Catholics alike are often perplexed by the myriad of devotions, traditions, practices, and beliefs that the Catholic Church has accumulated over the past twenty centuries. Why pray to St. Anthony to find something lost? Why keep a St. Christopher medal in your car? Or why bury a statue of St. Joseph — upside down! — in your yard when selling your house?

In Helen Hoffner's lovingly-illustrated, encyclopedic Catholic Treasures and Traditions, you'll find succinct – and sometimes amusing – answers to these and hundreds of other questions. This delightful book explains the origin and nature of most of the common traditions of the Catholic Faith, as well as the source and meaning of many of the quaint and obscure ones.

About the Author

Dr. Helen Hoffner is a professor at Holy Family University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her research on the history of the Rosary led her to co-author The Rosary Collector’s Guide, which provides historical information for rosary collectors, antique dealers, and historians.

Deirdre M. Folley is an artist living in New England with her husband, artist John Folley, and their children. Deirdre's pursuits, from the practical and the artistic to the theoretical and intellectual, are varied, but all converge at her interest in and passion for Catholic culture and the good of marriage and the family. Primarily instructed in art by her grandmother, Elizabeth Edwards, Deirdre also studied art under John Schmitt, son of artist Carl Schmitt, as well as at the Catholic University of America, where she majored in philosophy.
