Overview

Ecclesial Reform and Deform Movements in the South African Context is the fourth volume in a series on the interface between ecumenical theology and social transformation in the (South) African context. Ecclesial movements are amongst the most significant drivers of social transformation. The essays in this volume identify, describe and assess a variety of ecclesial movements. Such movements are often highly contested so that the same movement

may be described by some as a reform movement and by others as a deform movement.

About the Author

Ernst M. Conradie is Senior Professor and Miranda Pillay is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape.

Miranda Pillay, (now retired) senior lecturer at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) remains affiliated to this institution where her current academic status is that of research fellow. Describing herself as a "Theo-ethical Feminist Biblical scholar" she continues to research, write and speak from her experience as a 'coloured' woman of faith living in a (post-apartheid) South African context. She serves on the Theological Advisory Council on Gender-based Violence of the South African Faith and Family Institute (SAFFI) which gives her a platform to explore the interrelatedness between theory and praxis. Her relationship with this (and other) organizations involves working on gender-justice issues from inter-faith and multi-cultural perspectives. Based on insights gained from Feminist Biblical Hermeneutics, Womanist Ethics, and the research and writing done by the Circle of Concerned African Woman Theologians, Miranda Pillay's current research focus is primarily on the impact of skewed gender power-relations - a lived-reality often justified by the ways traditions and religions uphold, defend, maintain and reinscribe normative patriarchal power. As a member of the Anglican Church Miranda Pillay continues to serve the community on parish, Diocesan and Provincial levels in her capacity as gender-justice activist and theologian.
