Description: This book examines the "translational gap" between animal models of neuropsychiatric disease and human studies.
Purpose: It is intended "perhaps to find a more common language, methodology and even motivation, for carrying out translational research." This is essential, given the current status of neuropsychopharmacology. As the editors point out, discovery of new, effective treatments for psychiatric disease has waned, and pharmaceutical companies are starting to pull back from this crucial area of research. Improving the ability of researchers to use animal models to predict the effectiveness of proposed compounds in humans would help to address this issue. This book fulfills this intended purpose admirably.
Audience: The intended audience is scientists working on problems related to neuropsychopharmacology. The editors are experts on the topic. Trevor W. Robbins is the head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge and he has published widely on psychopharmacology and animal models of human neuropsychiatric disease. Barbara J. Sahakian, is a professor of clinical neuropsychology at the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Research Council/Wellcome Trust Behavioral and Clinical Neuroscience Institute, University of Cambridge, and she has published extensively on psychopharmacology.
