As the first synthesis of the century of Ptolemaic rule over Syria and Phoenicia this study fills a gap in the current scholarship on the Hellenistic World. It sheds light on the nature of Ptolemaic control, the kings' ruling strategies, and the effect of their rule at the local level while at the same time contributing to our understanding of the unique configuration of the Hellenistic empires.
