The Rossini Opera Festival mounted this modernized, highly unconventional 2008 production of Gioachino Rossini's two-act dramma giocoso +L'Equivoco Stravagante. The basic premise involves a young woman in danger of arranged marriage to an obnoxious, puffed-up rich man, with her heart set on nuptials to a devoted pauper instead. In desperation, she devised a crazy scheme to get what she wants: the older suitor will be convinced that she is actually a castrated boy. This particular production stars Marina Prudenskaja as Ernestina, Bruno de Simone as Gamberotto, and Marco Vinco as Buralicchio. The Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano e Trento, under the baton of Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli, and The Prague Chamber Choir, led by chorus master Pavel Vanek, lend musical accompaniment; Francesco Calcagnini designed the sets; and Emilio Sagi directs for the stage.
