This is a color atlas of gross pathology of the placenta with microscopic and clinical correlations, prepared by an author with clinical experience in the area. The book is meant as an introduction to the gross examination of the placenta. It also provides standardized protocols for reporting placental findings and reference tables for normal values. The book is directed at the level of the practicing or resident pathologist and obstetrician. It provides an overview of the techniques of placental examination and illustrations of the most commonly seen gross lesions. It will be particularly useful as a primer to those unacquainted with examination of the placenta. The book provides clear color illustrations of many common placental lesions and anomalies. There are relatively few references, but other more comprehensive textbooks on placental pathology are cited. The book is a useful primer on the gross examination of the placenta, providing a quick and well-illustrated overview of common placental anomalies and pathology. It has relatively few microscopic illustrations, and it does not provide a comprehensive discussion of placental pathophysiology. Some topics, such as molar gestations, are not covered, and in general few references are given. It serves as a useful atlas to accompany other textbooks on the placenta.
