Description: This third edition, published the year of the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Everest, is thoroughly revised and updated from the first two editions of 1997 and 1998. Overall, the book is a first rate compilation of pertinent information on almost every aspect of health and illness at high altitude, higher than 2,500 meters.
Purpose: The authors' purpose is to present, in highly readable form, practical information on almost any medical problem that might be encountered at high altitude. It includes a common sense approach, careful clinical descriptions, useful algorithms for management, and much more.
Audience: This book is written for all individuals who go to high altitude or who deal with such individuals, whether they be climbers, expedition physicians, trekkers, or others who might give health advice. The authors are experienced mountaineers, well educated in both clinical medicine and the art and science of dealing with various aspects of acute mountain sickness, and complications thereof.
Features: This is much more than the typical handbook. It is an encyclopedia of useful information of almost every conceivable aspect of high altitude medicine, physiology, and biology. High altitude illness is treated in extensio, as are related topics such as children, pregnancy, and various medical complications at these elevations. The figures are lucid, and several flow charts on the pathogenesis of high altitude illness are most useful. Also included is a glossary of terms and eight appendixes of valuable information.
Assessment: This edition is a first-rate contribution. The authors are to be congratulated for a thorough and lucid approach to "mountain medicine" in its manifold aspects. I know of nothing comparable on the subject. It should be a vade mecum for everyone who challenges the upper altitudes.
