Description: This is the third edition of a book from an author who is not only a premier arthroscopist and leader in the field of hip arthroscopy for the past two decades, but also one of the most trustworthy and sincere speakers in all of orthopedics. Certainly, the key value of this edition is to keep us all current in the most dynamically changing and improving facet of orthopedics.
Purpose: Indeed, this is the foundational reason for this updated edition. I own both previous editions and depend on them for practice, but it must be acknowledged that techniques have improved over time and our ability to address hip pathologies, now including snapping hips, labral tears, and femoral acetabular impingement, is far greater than when the first edition was published.
Audience: Dr. Byrd warns in his introduction that hip arthroscopy should not be approached in a cavalier fashion. We must be certain of the diagnosis, be facile in skills, and have a variety of tools in our armamentarium to address all the pathologies we may encounter. This book will be welcomed by all surgeons currently performing hip arthroscopy and all residents and fellows developing their skills. As hip arthroscopy becomes even more commonplace for sports medicine surgeons, they, too, will be dependent on the high quality of pearls and mentorship that only Dr. Byrd and his contributors can provide.
Features: This third edition reviews foundational anatomy, physical examination, imaging, and portal placements. The imaging quality is exemplary, a necessity in a how-to book on arthroscopic techniques. The importance of rehabilitation in recovery is not lost on Dr. Byrd or this book, which devotes almost 20 percent of its pages to protocols and images of optimal rehabilitation of patients after hip arthroscopy.
Assessment: I emphasize to my residents that when reviewing books, articles, and presentations, it is always important to understand who is speaking. If the speaker is a known straight shooter, then the value of the presentation skyrockets. That is what this book is all about. It is a wonderful, efficient presentation of the entire gamut of hip arthroscopy edited by one of the most trusted spokesman in the field who has gathered an impressive group of contributors from around the world. This is a must-read for any surgeon intending to perform hip arthroscopy and should be in every medical library, not only because it is an update, but also because it is the go-to book in hip arthroscopy.
