A wave of motion caught her eye and Amanda sprang up from the sheets of the bed, just as an enormous velvet-red book leaped from the shelf and threw itself at Charlie. Charlie screamed and threw her hands out in front of her, and Amanda called desperately for assistance. They managed to bat it away once, but it circled round and came back with just as much speed as before. It made a dull smacking sound as it hit Charlie's head, and she crumpled to the floor.
