Pop culture specialist Deluxe takes a comprehensive look at yé-yé girls, or singers of campy French pop songs dealing mostly with teenage angst in love and other youthful subjects. The focus is mainly on the early 1960s, when France was poised on the edge of social change that would transform thinking about money, gender roles, and politics. He examines the early lives and careers of the most famous yé-yé girls, including Françoise Hardy, Chantal Goya, and France Gall, among many others, and includes interviews with some singers, a look at influential performers outside of France, and a brief glance at present-day yé-yé music. Since very few books deal with yé-yé girls in depth, this work fills an important niche in its treatment of the subject, though the author is clear that it is not meant to be an exhaustive work. Beautiful photos accompany analyses of lyrics and discussions of the cultural and social context of these beautiful young women. The singers were both idolized and commercialized; many of them appeared frequently in fashion advertisements and movies. VERDICT This book will appeal to both pop culture lovers and those interested in music.
