About the Author

John Matthews BSc in Biochemistry, BVMS, MRCVS, is a recently retired partner in a veterinary practice in Chelmsford, UK. He has a particular interest in caprine medicine, having kept goats for over 35 years. He is an Honorary Veterinary Surgeon for the British Goat Society and Past President of the Goat Veterinary Society.

Description: This third edition of an overview of goat diseases and health last updated in 2009 includes discussion of a new disease (Schmallenberg virus) seen in Northern Europe.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide current, relevant scientific information in goat disease and husbandry to enable diagnosis of disease along with recommendations for treatment options.
Audience: The intent was "to provide a reasonably priced text that would provide useful and practical information to veterinary surgeons regardless of practice specialty as well as others that might work with goats." This book would be suitable for veterinary students or inquisitive goat owners who have basic biology and animal husbandry knowledge. The author has personal experience owning goats and professional experience treating goats for over 25 years.
Features: The book covers all aspects of goat health, from reproduction to common diseases for different age groups. It includes useful tables that summarize and highlight information and helpful color images of common diseases. Due to the quick reference design of the book, there is limited detail on pathophysiology and extensive treatment options. However, it is a good starting point for novice goat owners or veterinarians.
Assessment: This is a good overview of goat diseases. Although the focus is on disease management in the U.K., the book is still useful to practitioners in the U.S. as a reference. It can be used as a reminder of disease processes and diagnostics, but may be deficient in the areas of diagnostic tests available in the U.S. and in treatment options.
