About the Author

Originally from the Midwest, Karen now resides in Tampa Bay. She spent over thirty years in health care and earned a master’s in health administration from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Writing was always a huge part of her professional life. But as a young mother, she spent many hours reading bedtime stories to her two beautiful children. She found it very fascinating to watch how storybooks captured her children’s attention and enhanced their imagination. Karen is now a mom to four little fur babies. The idea for a children’s storybook series came to her as she watched her four papillons play and conform to their place in the pack. The first book, A New Home for Chris, is the beginning of the adventure.

CHAPTER 1

Chris is an energetic little, sable and white Papillon puppy.

Papillons (pronounced pah-pee-yawn) are named after the French word for butterfly, and they are sometimes called the "butterfly dogs." This is because of their big, hair-fringed ears, which resemble the shape of a butterfly.

Today is an exciting day for Chris. He is moving to a new home in the big city.

Chris was born on a farm where he lives with his mom, his sister, and the very nice family who owns the farm, Joann and Lowell.

On the farm, there are horses and cows, and big tractors. Chris likes to chase the horses and bark at the cows. And he likes to watch the big tractors as they move slowly around the fields.

But today, for the very first time, Chris will get on a big airplane. He will travel to his new home in the big city.

Chris packs his little, red bag and says goodbye to his mom and sister.

He makes his way to the airport to jump on the big airplane that will take him to his new home.

Once Chris is seated on the big airplane, it speeds down the runway and climbs toward the big, blue sky. Chris can see the big, white, cottony clouds as the big airplane moves through the air.

"I wonder what my new home and my new family are like," Chris thinks to himself. "I wonder what the big city is like," he ponders. "Will it have horses and cows and tractors?"

After a few hours of flying high in the sky, the big airplane begins to glide downward. It lands on the big city airport runway and creeps to the gate.

Chris jumps up from his seat on the big airplane, grabs his little, red bag, and scurries up the long ramp to the big airport lobby.

There, he spots the pilot of the big airplane. "Thank you for a smooth airplane ride, Captain," he says to the pilot. "You're welcome, Chris," says the pilot. "It was a pleasure to have you fly with us today!"

Looking around the big airport lobby, Chris feels very frightened. He has never seen this many people in one place.

Shaking his head and looking around with amazement, he wonders, "How will I ever find my new family?"

As Chris gazes around the lobby at the cluster of people he spots a big sign being held by a friendly looking lady. The sign reads:

"WELCOME CHRIS! WE ARE YOUR NEW FAMILY!"

Very excitedly, Chris dashes over to the friendly looking lady and announces, "I am Chris, your new, little Papillon puppy!"

The friendly looking lady scoops Chris up in her arms and says to him, "We are so happy to meet you, Chris! I am Karen, and this is Hal," she says and points to the man standing next to her.

They hug Chris, pick up his little, red bag, and walk out of the airport lobby to go home.

On the drive home from the airport, Chris sits in the back seat and observes all the sights.
