Description: This is a comprehensive overview of neonatal intensive care nursing, including prenatal risk factors, neonatal physiology, the pathophysiology and treatment of common neonatal problems, and professional nursing issues in neonatal care presented in an easy to use outline format. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: The book is designed as an easy to use clinical resource for nurses working in neonatal intensive care units, while at the same time providing a comprehensive overview of neonatal care from identification of high risk newborns to the normal physiology and pathophysiology of neonatal illnesses and the nursing care of these infants. It also sets out to present professional practice issues. These are broad but important objectives and the book meets them well.
Audience: Neonatal intensive care nurses at all levels, from beginner to expert clinician, are the intended audience. The authors have a wealth of experience in this field and include neonatal nurses, clinical nurse specialists, and neonatal nurse practitioners. Contributors also include those with expertise in prenatal care, nursing research, and legal issues in practice.
Features: Topics covered reflect the full scope of neonatal intensive care nursing practice, including recognition of at risk newborns, newborn physiology, and common complications as well as complex illness and nursing care. In addition, professional issues in nursing, including research and legal issues, are addressed. A strength of the book is the outline format which makes it easy to use as a quick reference in a clinical setting. It also is an excellent format for designing education/orientation programs for neonatal nurses.
Assessment: This is a well-organized, well-written book offering a current, accurate, and easy to use overview of neonatal intensive care nursing. The new edition includes a chapter on care of the late preterm infant, a valuable addition that reflects current practice with a uniquely vulnerable group of newborns. The outline format makes it a good complement to other books in the field. Its scope is limited to nursing care and it is not written for medical providers (NNPs, residents) as is, for example, Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care, 6th edition, Merenstein and Gardner (Elsevier, 2006).
