It considers the different diagnostic techniques that may be employed, thereby providing a better understanding of the surgical rationale, indications, and contraindications. The value of nonsurgical options is also assessed.
Audience: The authors intend the book for orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, rheumatologists, neurologists, physiatrists, physical therapists, psychologists, and social security/insurance specialists. However, it is best suited for neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons.
Features: The book explains the anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and biomechanics of disc degeneration and low back pain. It describes how to determine the cause of a patient's low back pain and the treatment, surgical or nonsurgical, that is most likely to work, based upon the evidence. It accomplishes this in a smooth, effective fashion. The references are well chosen and numerous, but not overly so.
Assessment: This is a well-written and useful book. Its relatively brevity is an asset and demonstrative of the authors' effort to eliminate "fluff." It deals specifically with those data relevant to its subject, no more and no less.
