The remarkable point in Middleton's letters is the plainness with which they urge on Sandwich, not indeed the corruption, but the bad effects almost certain to follow the abuse Of patronage and the ill judged appointments that were made in the dock yards. We have before us no evidence that similar corruption pervaded the war office, but the letters to Lord Keppel and others, and especially to Lord George Germain (pp. 44 tell of the astounding ignorance which directed the victualling and trans port of the troops after the war, and help us to understand the general mismanagement of the war itself.
