Overview

Seventeen-year-old Sherri arrives in Lewton excited to start a summer job working as a student reporter. Instead of a thriving community, she finds a creepy ghost town. Most of the local stores have been boarded up, and their now zombie-like owners are working at the new big-box superstore, Shopwells. Gr 8 Up—When 17-year-old Sherri accepts a student internship at a newspaper in a sleepy Canadian town, she's anxious to hone her hard-hitting journalism talents. Much to her disappointment, though, she's assigned the community section and is stuck reporting on poorly attended church rummage sales and a lackluster farmers' market. As Sherri covers her beat, she discovers that Shopwells, a big-box store, has an unusually strong influence on the town's residents and businesses. As she investigates, she uncovers evidence suggesting that Shopwells is employing mind control to manipulate its customers and employees. Although the plot is interesting, the protagonist doesn't always act or speak like a modern teenager, using words like "slacks" instead of "pants" and "gone to bed with" to refer to sex. The book has a certain naïveté that makes it feel suited to a younger audience, though the main character swears and talks about having sex with her boyfriend, an issue with no real bearing on the plot. These concerns make it difficult to pin down this novel's audience. A budding journalist, almost 18, takes an internship at a small-town newspaper and discovers ugly doings afoot at the big-box store recently opened nearby. Hardly has Sherri stepped off the bus than her reporter's antennae go up: Not only does everyone who works at the huge Shopwells outside town behave like a smiling zombie, but nearly all the smaller local businesses are closed and papered over with Shopwells fliers. Moreover, her new boss stonewalls her inquiries, and when she visits the store, she finds herself buying a cartload of junky goods she normally wouldn't have touched. What is going on? Amid a whirl of stolen evidence, veiled threats and an attempted kidnapping, Sherri investigates a nefarious scheme worthy of conspiracy theories: "I mean," says one employee, "how else do you get people to work minimum wage with no overtime, no health benefits, stocking shelves, and like it?" In the meantime, she finds hot-and-heavy romance with a local lad, threatening her relationship with her Toronto boyfriend. The romantic subplot is really shoehorned in, but it lightens the overall tone of this briskly paced mystery. (Light horror. 13-16)
