Description: This update of a 2009 book on stroke recovery includes expanded chapters on genetics and treatment options in a very comprehensive, yet not overwhelming manner. It is detailed enough to ensure readers are up to date on evidence-based medicine, and is the perfect balance of bench and bedside medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to present all aspects of stroke recovery and rehabilitation, an important objective for the number one cause of severe disability.
Audience: The intended audience is "academicians and clinicians alike and for all disciplines that have the responsibility and pleasure of helping stroke survivors." However, the terminology and concepts the book covers makes the book most appropriate for senior clinicians or residents specifically in the fields of physical medicine and rehabilitation or neurology.
Features: The book takes a potentially overwhelming topic, stroke recovery, and breaks it down into very manageable topics. There is a broad introduction covering topics such as the history of stroke rehabilitation, management and physiology of acute stroke, and cerebral stroke syndromes both supra and infratentorial. The next section covers the neurophysiology of stroke recovery including mechanisms, imagining, genetics, and medications. There are then two sections on specific impairments and the corresponding treatments. A section on poststroke complications, including spasticity, fatigue, nutrition, and bowel and bladder management are followed by sections on orthotics and community reintegration and systems of care. Overall, each section is broken down into chapters which are anywhere from 10-25 pages long, thus making the book very user friendly and concise. Some of the pictures appear somewhat dated.
Assessment: This is a much needed update, given all of the advances in the field of stroke rehabilitation. This extremely useful book should be a part of every clinician's library — it will help promote the care of patients.
