Description: This book presents a practical approach to dermatopathology and is geared to be used in conjunction with existing books that cover most aspects of dermatopathology. The extensive charts of diagnoses linked to clinical features are especially useful, as clinical descriptions are usually available and would be helpful in narrowing down the disease possibilities.
Purpose: The objective is to provide a portable, practical review of dermatopathology that can be used at the microscope and be helpful in making diagnoses. The author is successful in achieving this worthy objective.
Audience: This book is written for residents in dermatology and pathology as well as practicing pathologists, dermatopathologists, and dermatologists. The author thinks that even experienced physicians would find this book helpful, and I agree as the clinical features would be useful to pathologists. The author is a world-class dermatopathologist.
Features: The most important aspects of dermatopathology are captured in this book. The photomicrographs are excellent. The clinical tables are innovative. The special stains section will be very helpful to all practitioners of dermatopathology. In this ever-increasing area, it is useful to have special stains listed in one place. Shortcomings are inherent when a book aims to hit the most important features. The author did not think he could include normal skin, EM, hair, nails, therapy, and pathogenesis. This is a big group of topics, but they are available elsewhere.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that is useful as an adjunct to the larger textbooks of dermatopathology. Many newer books are either atlases with great photographs or comprehensive, heavy textbooks that include everything. Most of the photomicrographs in this book appeared in the 2005 edition. However, enough new material has accumulated to justify a new edition, such as special stains and entities like nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
