Description: This book comprehensively covers the diagnosis, treatment, and special considerations of particular types of headaches in light of the recently published third edition of The International Classification of Headache Disorders. The previous edition of this book was published in 2011.
Purpose: In terms of staying current with the literature on headaches, this is a valuable addition to the literature.
Audience: This book is useful for all clinicians and supporting personnel involved in diagnosing and treating patients with headaches. The editors have brought together an extraordinary panel of experts to review numerous topics and who collectively have elevated the understanding of headache for those of us who do not treat patients with headaches on a daily basis.
Features: The book is divided into 10 parts based upon the specifics of the headache: episodic, chronic, those associated with addiction and substance abuse, secondary headache, treatments, etc. Chapters in each part focus on specific areas such as head and neck trauma, migraines, refractory headaches, and pediatric and adolescent headaches. A great number of tables help make the differentiations intuitive and each chapter has suggested readings that are very helpful but in not in the weeds of the primary research literature.
Assessment: This is the best book outlining the concepts of the diagnosis and treatment of headaches I have come across. It is comprehensive without being overly detailed. It has all the information and clinical pearls one needs to feel comfortable differentiating headaches without being jargon-heavy. I highly recommend this for every clinician who is involved in the primary care diagnosis and treatment of patients with headaches.
