This is a revised, updated, and expanded second edition of an excellent textbook. It contains material on a wide range of pediatric diagnoses, examining both the medical aspects and the therapeutic interventions indicated for each diagnostic group. The material on motor skill development and testing provides a framework for assessment and treatment in the subsequent pediatric categories. The purpose is to provide current information about various disabilities and to describe the skills needed to evaluate and treat a child with such a disability. The book is written for the entry-level physical therapy student and novice therapist; however, the comprehensiveness and detail with which it is written makes this book an interesting and valuable resource for an experienced physical and occupational therapist. The author and the contributors are very credible in their fields and represent a variety of clinical settings. The text has a very clean, legible quality to it. The black-and-white photographs are a useful adjunct to the text; however, the clarity of a number of photographs could be improved. The figures, tables, and displays are well presented, concise, and very informative. The use of case studies emphasizes the clinical relevance of the topic. The references are numerous and relevant. The index is useful and clearly arranged. This is an excellent textbook for the entry-level physical therapy student and the pediatric therapist. Its comprehensive presentation of therapeutic management of the pediatric patient, from infancy to early adulthood, makes this book a valuable resource.

This third edition updates what has become a widely accepted and useful text for current and future pediatric physical therapists. Following initial chapters on normal motor development and tests of infant and child development, the remainder of the book is organized by pediatric diseases and disabilities commonly treated by pediatric physical therapists. This is a fundamental text that focuses on clinically relevant information useful to a wide audience interested in pediatric physical therapy. Unique to this updated edition is the inclusion of case studies which facilitate the link between the theory and research presented to clinical practice. This book provides an excellent foundation for physical therapy students and is a very usable resource for the general physical therapy practitioner. All chapters are well-referenced by the contributors for those seeking further information on a particular topic. In addition to major revisions of chapters included in the second edition and the inclusion of several new contributors, this third edition also features new chapters on orthopedics and limb deficiency in children as well as traumatic brain injury. The text in each chapter is enhanced by black-and-white photos or drawings. Many easily-referenced tables are included that summarize large amounts of information. All topics covered within a chapter are listed on the first page of each chapter for easy reference. Particularly outstanding and thorough are the chapters on pulmonary disorders written by the editor, including orthopedic management, traumatic brain injury, burns, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Although the back cover indicates that sports-related injuries in adolescents areincluded, there does not appear to be related content in the book. There is a brief description of childhood fractures in the orthopedic management chapter; however, content concerning strength development and conditioning or specific injuries is not included. Those who are acquainted with the second edition and find it useful will want to replace it with this new edition. The expanded, updated chapters, addition of new chapters, and inclusion of case studies make this one of the best overall pediatric physical therapy texts. As compared with other texts available, it is comprehensive without being overwhelming in detail.
