About the Author

William B. Cairns (1867-1932) was assistant professor of American literature at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, which now houses a collection of women’s literature endowed by his estate. He wrote On the Development of American Literature from 1815 to 1833 (1898) and British Criticisms of American Writings, 1815-1833 (1922), and edited Selections from Early American Writers, 1607-1800.
