How do I search for books?Close

Searching by ISBN is usually the quickest and most accurate way to find a book. Our search function allows you to use this method to find a single title or to find all of your books at once. To search for multiple books, enter one or multiple ISBNs, separate them by a comma, space or return. (The ISBN is the 10- or 13-digit number on the back of the book cover.) You may also search by title, author, or keyword.

What is an ISBN?Close

An ISBN is an International Standard Book Number. Every book sold anywhere in the world should have a unique ISBN, meaning you can find any book in the world simply with that one number. An ISBN number has ten or thirteen characters and is assigned by R. R. Bowker in the United States and by a variety of agencies worldwide.

What if I can't find the book I need?Close

If you can't find the book you need, your book may be a course pack or is privately published. Please check with your professor.

Buying Books

What type of payment is accepted?Close

We accept American Express, MasterCard, Discover, Visa, Diners Club, JCB, and purchasing cards.

We sell Barnes & Noble Gift Cards and eGift Cards. Both can be used to purchase new, used, and digital books from our Textbooks store, as well as all other Barnes & Noble.com products. Textbook Rentals can only be purchased using credit cards (accepted credit cards are listed above); Gift Cards, eGift Cards, Online Gift Certificates and PayPal are not acceptable forms of payment.

When will I be billed?Close

Your credit card will be billed when we ship your order, generally 24 hours after you place it.

What are my shipping options?Close

We know you need your textbooks as fast as you can get them. Choose Express Delivery as your shipping option and receive your books within 3 business days of their shipment. If you need your books even sooner, you can choose Expedited Delivery as your shipping option.

When will I receive my books?Close

To find out when you will receive your item, you need to consider the availability of the item you ordered and the shipping option you selected. The equation we use is:

Available-to-Ship Time + Delivery Method Ship Time = Total Delivery Time

For example, if your order ships within 24 hrs, your total delivery time will be 4 days (24 hours + 3 Day Delivery = 4 business days). Orders placed after noon on Friday or at any time during the weekend will not be shipped until the following Monday. Please keep in mind that we do not ship on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.

How do I know you received my order?Close

When you successfully submit an order you will see a confirmation screen. You will also receive a confirmation email within two to three hours. When your order is shipped you will receive a second email with a tracking number. If you do not receive a confirmation screen or email, we may not have received your order. Can I order a bulk quantity of textbooks?Close

In many cases, we can give discounts on orders of 50 copies or more of the same title. To request a price quote, please complete the Bulk Order form, and we will respond within 48 hours from receipt of your request. Click here to place a bulk order request.

What is the return policy on new textbooks?Close

Returns are accepted within 14 days of the date that you received your order. Books can be mailed with the original packing slip to:

Used Books

Does Barnes & Noble.com sell used books?Close

We have the largest used-textbook inventory on the Web! If we have a used version of your textbook, you'll find it in your search results. You can search for new, used, rental, and digital textbooks by entering the title, author, or ISBN into the search bar.

What is the condition of the used books you sell?Close

We sell only the highest-quality used books. You won't find mildew stains, missing pages, or pervasive underlining! Even lab manuals, study guides, and workbooks are intact and virtually scribble-free. However, we cannot guarantee that used books published with accompanying media (CDs, CD-ROMs, etc.) have all their original materials intact.

What is the used book return policy?Close

You can return used books, so don't be afraid to add a used textbook to your cart. Returns are accepted within 14 days of the date that you received your order. Books should be mailed with the original packing slip to the address provided by the marketplace seller you purchased from.

What is the used book shipping policy?Close

Used textbooks do not qualify for free shipping because they are sold through our Marketplace Sellers. New textbook orders may qualify for Free Shipping and Free Member Express Shipping. Some restrictions apply. See details.

Textbook Rental

What is textbook rental?Close

With our textbook rental program, you can rent thousands of textbooks, saving time and money. With textbook rental, you don't own the book, you are simply borrowing it from Barnes & Noble.com for a fee, and then returning it to us at the end of the rental period you selected.

To find textbooks available for rent, simply search for the book you are looking for, select the amount of time you would like to rent it for from the drop down menu, add it to your cart, and check out. Your book will be shipped to you, and you are free to use the textbook for the rental period you selected. At the end of your rental period, ship your books back to us (via FREE UPS Shipping) OR choose to extend your rental period or purchase your rental.

How long can I rent a book for?Close

We offer very flexible rental periods up to 130 days. Please refer to individual Textbook pages for the rental periods. You have the option to extend or purchase your book anytime during your rental period.

How can I use my rental textbook?Close

All Rented Materials must be returned in salable condition. Salable condition will be determined by us in our sole discretion, but generally means:

  • Book spine intact
  • No excessive damage to cover or contents
  • All original pages intact
  • All original components present
  • No excessive highlighting, writing or other markings
  • Normal use highlighting and writing is permitted
Any writing or highlighting that Barnes & Noble deems excessive or that hinders the readability of the Rented Materials will be your responsibility and you will be charged for a replacement. Please follow all of our guidelines to ensure no fees will be charged to your account.

Would supplemental materials like access codes, CDs, DVDs. etc come with the Rental?Close

We do not guarantee that access codes/keys/cards, CDs, DVDs, workbooks, charts or any other type of supplemental material will come with books rented. If a book you rent from Barnes & Noble arrives with a supplement, you are allowed to use it at no extra cost. At the end of the rental, all supplemental material must be returned with the Rented Materials.

How do I return my rental at the end of my rental period?Close

Return shipping on rental textbooks is FREE using our easy-to-use UPS shipping labels. To do this, please sign in to your account and click on "My Account." In the Rental Management Section of your account, click on "Manage Textbook Rentals" and find the book you would like to return, and print the shipping label. To return your rental, you must print our shipping label and packing slip, pack your books in a box or sturdy mailer, and return them via UPS.
Note: Rental textbook returns will not be accepted at retail store locations.

Where can I find my rental due date?Close

We have listed the due date for each textbook you rent on your Manage Textbook Rentals page under Active Rentals.

Can I extend my rental period or purchase my rental?Close

You have the option to extend your rental for 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, or 125 days. You can also keep your book by converting your rental into a purchase. Just visit your Manage Textbook Rentals page, in the "My Account" section of the site.

Why was I charged other fees? Close

When you return your book, we check it out to make sure the next student can use it. If we judge the book to be no longer suitable for use, we will charge you for the replacement of the book, and it will remain the property of Barnes & Noble.com. Unusable books are ones with excessive highlighting or writing, missing pages, and/or damaged spines or covers. Our damaged book guidelines can be found here. In addition, failure to return any associated materials that accompanied the rental textbook, such as CD-ROM, will result in extra charges to your credit card on file.

If you don't return your book on time, we will automatically add a 15 extension to your rental. If after that 15 day period you have still not returned the book to us, we will convert your rental into a purchase by charging you the difference.

What is the return policy on rentals?Close

We have a generous, 21-day, any-reason return policy. Just return the book, and as long as we receive it by day 21 in the same condition as when you purchased it, we'll give you a full refund (minus $5 return fee).

What happens if I return non-rental books/items with my rental return?Close

Barnesandnoble.com will contact you, at the default email address stored in your Account, to ask you what you would like for us to do with the non-rental books/items. If you would like to get your non-rental items back, you will need to reply to the email and will be responsible for shipping charges. If you do not respond to the email within 30 days, we will assume that you do not want the item(s), and you will not be refunded and the item will not be returned to you.

Will I be charged sales tax on my rental order?Close

Taxes are applied to textbook rentals where required by state law.

How do I sell my textbooks?Close

To get a quote for a textbook, click on Sell Your Used Textbooks. Then locate the ISBN number on the back of the book you want to sell and enter it above. Click on the button, "Get A Quote," to see how much we will pay you for your book. If you agree on the price, we will provide you with a return label so you can send the book to us for free. Once we receive your book, we'll send you a check for your total sale if its in an acceptable condition.

You must have at least $10.00 worth of books to sell in order to participate.

A price quote is based on future demand for the book and current stock availability.

What if there is no ISBN on the back of the book, how can I locate it?Close

If the ISBN is not on the back of the book, you can look on the page in the front of the book that contains the copyright information.

What are acceptable book buy back conditions?Close

We purchase books in order to resell them as used textbooks. Therefore, they must be in good condition. That means no mildew stains, missing pages, or lots of underlined text. Books that we determine to be in unsatisfactory condition will be destroyed, and you will not receive payment for that book. If you are not sure whether or not your book is acceptable, simply ask yourself if you would purchase it in its present condition.

In order to receive full credit, all items included with the textbook must be included. Textbooks missing original CDs, study guides, diskettes or other loose-leaf items will not receive full credit. Decisions regarding the condition of books we receive rest solely with BN.com. All decisions are final. If we decide that your book is not in good condition we will notify you by email. You will have 7 days from the date of our email to request that we send you back a copy of the same book at your shipping expense. Please note however, that we are unable to return the exact copy of the book that you sent to us.

What is considered a damaged book?Close

Books and considered "damaged," will not qualify for buy back. Damaged books do not have any of the following:

  • Stains of any sort
  • Disfigurement due to water/fluid exposure
  • Missing, torn or loose pages/cover
  • Broken spine/binding
  • Any other significant damage that would prevent us from reselling it.

Must I have the original CD that came with my textbook?Close

We prefer that all textbooks originally accompanied by software are sent back to us with that software, but it's not essential. Our system should indicate different prices for books with and without software.

Do I have to pay for shipping?Close

We've gone ahead and paid for your shipping. Print the return shipping label from the confirmation e-mail you receive. Also, print a copy of your confirmation email and include it inside the package of books you are selling. If you need to ship in multiple boxes make sure to include a copy of the email in each box. Then just drop your package(s) off at your nearest post office box.

You may send books to us using different shipping methods. However, please note that Barnes & Noble.com will not be responsible (financially or physically) for any such shipments.

How will I know you received my books? Close

Once your package is received in our warehouse you will receive a shipment acknowledgment email.

When will I get paid?Close

If you opt to be paid by check:
Checks normally arrive within 2-3 weeks from the time we receive your package.

If you opt to be paid by PaPal?:
Your PayPal? account should be credited 1-2 weeks after you mail your books. Once we credit your PayPal? account you have 30 days to claim the funds, after which PayPal? will return the funds to us and we will send you a check.

I own or rent NOOKStudy eTextbooks. Can I use them with Yuzu?Close

Yuzu and NOOKStudy are not compatible applications so you cannot read your current NOOKStudy eTextbooks with Yuzu.

Your rental and purchased etextbooks continue to be available for your use within the NOOKStudy application.

Can I purchase or rent textbooks for my NOOKStudy account?Close

No. As of March 31, 2014 all Barnes & Noble digital etextbooks purchases and rentals are available in the new Yuzu platform.

Yuzu is the new eTextbook reading and study platform from Barnes & Noble. It offers more mobility than NOOK Study and a simple, elegant interface with updated features that our students have said they appreciate and use the most.

If I previously purchased a NOOK Study eTextbook, can I read it on Yuzu?Close

No, Yuzu is a completely new application that is not compatible with Nook Study.

We will be notifying all Nook Study purchasers soon with instructions on how to redeem a Yuzu version of their purchased Nook Study textbooks.
