When it comes to writing spy novels, no one is more erudite or elegant than Alan Furst, whose novels -- all set against the dramatic European backdrop of World War II -- are rich with both historical fact and brilliantly imagined circumstances. In our interview, Furst discusses the genre he calls "historical espionage fiction. "I guess basically it's a genre that I made up, and it kind of took me a couple of books to figure out what the rules were," he explains.
