Meet the Writers
Sierra Leone native Ishmael Beah was only 13 years old when he was handed an AK-47 and sent off to the killing fields. He tells his bracing story in the memoir A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. In a lighthearted portion of our exclusive interview, Beah talks about his early affinity for the English language, which he practiced by reciting everything from Shakespearean sonnets to rap songs by The Sugar Hill Gang.
