What is the difference between a Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate and a Barnes & Noble eGift Card?
 
The Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate was renamed the Barnes & Noble eGift Card in May 2010. The only difference between them is that Online Gift Certificates do not have barcodes. You can redeem both formats in any Barnes & Noble or B. Dalton bookstore in addition to online. All you need to do is print out your online certificate and present it to your cashier at any Barnes & Noble store. Please ensure that your print out has both your certificate number and PIN. Barnes & Noble eGift Cards currently cannot be redeemed at Barnes & Noble College bookstores.


How do I redeem an Online Gift Certificate for a NOOKbook?

Online Gift Certificates must be saved to your account before you can redeem them to purchase NOOKbooks, single issue NOOKmagazines, or single issue NOOKnewspapers. Once saved, they will be automatically applied to your NOOKbook purchases.

How do I redeem a Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate for a product other than a NOOKbook at Barnes & Noble.com?

Browse our site to find the items you wish to buy and add them to your Cart. On the Cart page, click "Proceed to Checkout". In the Payment section of the Checkout page, click "Apply a Gift Card". Enter the Gift Certificate number and the PIN (the four-digit number located on your certificate. Please note that some Gift Certificates do not have a PIN.). Then click "Enter Another" if you are redeeming more than one Gift Certificate.

If the balance available on your Gift Certificate is less than the total cost of your order, you will be asked to provide an additional Gift Card, eGift Card, Online Gift Certificate, credit card information, pay via PayPal or select Pay by Phone.

Do all Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificates come with a PIN?

There is a PIN located on most Online Gift Certificates. If your certificate has a PIN, it must be entered to check your balance. Gift Certificates purchased before November 2003 do not have a PIN. Find out more about when a PIN is required.

How can I check the balance on my Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate?

You can check your balance anytime. Just click on Check Your Balance and follow the instructions. You will be asked to enter the certificate or validation number. In addition, a PIN is required for most Online Gift Certificates.

What can I buy online with a Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate?

Barnes & Noble Online Gift Certificates can be redeemed for any product sold at Barnes & Noble.com, except for a subscription to eMagazines or eNewspapers. Barnes & Noble Online Gift Certificates cannot be used to purchase Barnes & Noble Gift Cards or eGift Cards. Online Gift Certificates also can be used to join the Barnes & Noble Membership program. (Please note: a valid credit card is required to register for our Automatic Membership Renewal option.)

Do I need to keep my Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate after I've used it?

Yes, you should always keep your Online Gift Certificate. That's because money may still remain on your Online Gift Certificate for any of the following reasons:

You do not fully redeem your Online Gift Certificate
You choose to return the merchandise ordered with an Online Gift Certificate
We cannot fulfill your order and do not charge your account

In any of these cases, you will need both the Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate number and the PIN to place a new order.

What if the total cost of my order is greater than the amount of my Barnes & Noble.com Online Gift Certificate?

For purchases other than NOOKbooks, if the balance available on your Online Gift Certificate is less than the total cost of your order, you will be asked to provide credit card information or select Pay by Phone. Please note: If you select Pay by Phone to cover a balance, you must phone in your credit card number at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665) with your order number within 7 days of placing your order or your order will be cancelled.

For NOOKbook purchases, any available Online Gift Certificate balance will be redeemed first, and any outstanding balance will be charged to your default credit card.
