Help Desk: Electronic Books What is the Rocket eBook? The Rocket eBook is the first practical technology developed specifically for electronic reading. It's a lightweight, portable device the size of a paperback that lets you download, store, and read books and magazines anywhere -- at the beach, in school, or on trips. It comes preloaded with such starter resources as the Rocket eBook User Guide, the RANDOM HOUSE CONCISE DICTIONARY, and, just for fun, ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.
The Rocket eBook connects to your PC by way of a connecting cradle, similar to the way you'd update a PalmPilot or other personal digital assistant. You can then access the Internet, purchase, and download the books you want.
You can store about ten novels at a time. You can search, reference, and bookmark your reading. You can touch a word on the screen to look it up in the dictionary or link to a different reference work, or add your own notes and comments to the text. You can read for hours -- the battery lasts an average of 20-30 hours and fully recharges in 90 minutes. The Rocket eBook can even support documents published with audio content.
The high-contrast, high-resolution screen makes it very easy to read. It's backlit, so you can read at the beach, in direct sunlight, or in the bedroom in the dark. You can customize the type, choosing large type to make the Rocket eBook easier to read or small type to see more of the page. Left-handed, right-handed, vertical, or horizontal, you can read the Rocket eBook the way that you like best.
The Rocket eBook will work with any IBM-compatible computer with a 486 or faster processor running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0; 10 megabytes of hard-drive space are required for the software, and 16 megabytes of RAM are recommended. You'll need one available serial port to connect the Rocket eBook to the host computer and, of course, Internet access to get your books.
At this time the Rocket eBook is compatible only with IBM-compatible computers. Mac-compatible Rocket eBooks will be available later in 1999.
