Tax Information
In accordance with applicable law, Barnes&Noble.com collects tax in all states except NM. Sales tax is applied to the total amount of the order including gift-wrap fees (where applicable) and is based on the shipment's destination state and local sales tax rates.
States that impose sales tax collection on Shipping & Handling expenses require that sales tax be applied to Shipping & Handling when the item that is being shipped is subject to sales tax.
Barnes&Noble.com is able to process orders as tax exempt for qualifying entities. Instructions for processing tax exempt orders can be found by clicking the link below. The following states have no sales tax: AK, DE, MT, NH, OR. Tax exempt entities do not have to provide any documentation for orders shipping to states that have no sales tax.
For your planning and convenience, we display an estimated sales tax amount when orders are placed. The exact sales tax will be calculated and charged at the time your order is shipped. Federal tax is only added to orders delivered in Canada and is displayed as GST (Goods and Services Tax).
Items purchased through our PC & Video Games store are supplied by GameStop. GameStop collects tax on these items in all but the following states: AK, DE, MT, NH, and OR, which have no sales tax. Generally, this tax is applied to the total amount of the order, including shipping and handling charges and gift-wrap fees, however GameStop does not collect tax on shipping for the following states: AZ, IA, ID, IN, MA, ME, MO, UT, and WY.
Placing a Sales Tax-Exempt Order
Libraries, schools, not-for-profits, and other qualified groups and individuals may place a sales tax-exempt order once we have your tax-exempt certificate on file. To learn more, see Placing a Sales Tax-Exempt Order.
Magazines are not subject to sales tax.
Bibles are tax exempt in Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri and Texas. Bible sales tax credits can only be applied after the order has already shipped. Customers must email their request for credit to taxes@book.com.
Fees paid for Member cards are taxable in the following states: Arizona, California, and New York.

Gift Cards
Orders exceeding $200 are not eligible for Standard Shipping and must be sent via Expedited Air Service or UPS Air Service. To ensure safe delivery, a signature is required upon receipt of packages sent via Expedited Air Service or UPS Air Service. There are separate per-order and per-item charges for PC & Video Games and related products. Orders containing a console plus a game, software or accessory only incur the per-order charge for the console provided all items are in stock. Orders containing both in stock and future releases will be shipped as available and per-order charges will be applied to each shipment.

How to Calculate When an Item Will Be Delivered
The charts listed above display the total delivery time from the moment you order an item. However, you can calculate when an item will be delivered by simply adding the shipping availability time displayed on each product page ("Usually ships within 24 hours," for example) to the number of days your shipping method will take. Here's the simple equation:
Shipping Availability Time + Delivery Method Ship Time = Total Delivery Time
Example: If a book with a shipping availability message of "Usually ships within 2-3 days" is sent via Standard Delivery ("3 business days"), it will arrive in 5 to 6 business days.
About Our Shipping Service
Barnes & Noble offers worldwide shipping and a variety of delivery options to suit every schedule and budget. The services available and the cost of shipping depend on:
- Where you are shipping your order
- What your order contains (Books, DVDs, Posters, etc.)
Each item we sell has an "available to ship" time displayed next to it (for example, "Usually ships within 24 hours"). This figure tells you when the item is ready to leave our warehouse. The total time it will take to receive an item is determined by adding the "available to ship" time to the number of days your shipping method will take. We have done this calculation for you in the shipping tables on this page.
Per-Order and Per-Item Rate Charges
Unless your order qualifies for FAST&FREE DELIVERY, there is normally a flat, per-order charge for each order you place with Barnes & Noble.com. The amount of this charge is determined by:
- What you are ordering
- The shipping service you have chosen (for example, International)
- The delivery option you have chosen (for example, International Priority Airmail)
In addition, you will pay a per-item charge, which will vary with each type of item in your order (for example, Books or DVDs). Per-order and per-item charges are summarized in the shipping tables listed on this page, for each service and delivery option.
Order Types
Order types are defined by what your order contains. The order type determines your per-order charge (if any).
- Books or VHS (+Music/DVD) orders contain only books or VHS tapes, or either of these items plus any of the other merchandise we sell, including Music, DVDs, etc.
- Music/DVD Only orders contain Music, DVDs, or both.
Shipping Items with Different "Available to Ship" Times
- Send everything in as few packages as possible holds your order until all items are available to ship (including pre-orders). This minimizes shipping costs, but it means that you will have to wait longer for your order. NOTE: Even though you have chosen to ship your order together, we may still be required to send more than one package at no extra charge. (The following items are always shipped separately: Out-of-Print Books, PC & Video Games, Magazines, and Gift Cards.)
- Send each item as available increases your shipping costs, but you'll receive your items as quickly as possible.
Digital Products
Online Gift Certificates are sent immediately via email to the designated recipient's address. PDF versions of SparkNotes study guides and Quamut charts can be downloaded from an email sent to you moments after the Checkout process. Magazines can be read online or offline by clicking on the link in your confirmation email to go to Zinio for instructions.
There are no delivery charges for these items. Their cost does not count toward the $25 minimum to qualify for FAST&FREE DELIVERY of the rest of your order.
Magazines
Publishers need time to process a new printed magazine subscription. Please allow 6 to 10 weeks for your first issue to arrive by mail.
