Significant Books and Music of the Century, Year by Year
1914 was the year that war broke out in Europe, following the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand; the first transcontinental telephone call was made; and the Panama Canal was completed.

Significant Book of 1914:
Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan of the Apes

BOOK Although librarians and critics never really approved, the creation of Tarzan was wildly popular from the start. It launched the career of Edgar Rice Burroughs as the king of adventure fiction and later inspired movies, TV programs, comic strips, and many other books.

  Significant Music of 1914:
Erik Satie's Sports et Divertissements

Erik Satie composed his SPORTS ET DIVERTISSEMENTS, a set of 20 very brief, humorous musical sketches for piano. The French composer's spare, playful style influenced many avant-garde artists, including the dadaists and surrealists.
