This novel first published in 1850 tells the story of a young tailor-boy with instincts and aspirations beyond the expectations of his working-class background. Kingsley exposes the social injustice suffered by workers in the clothing trade and gives an insight into the Chartist movement with which he was involved during the 1840s.
