The thing is infested with insects. I just returned it. I don't know if the bugs came from Barns and Noble's warehouse or the supplier, but I am utterly disgusted. I will not get a new one or buy anything online from B&N again.
It's too bad--the bamboo is really nice.

I ordered this lapdesk because it seemed to be of the best value and comfort that I could find browsing around in the Barnes&Noble website. Plus, these sorts of things are relatively expensive in Australia, even after taking shipping charges into account.
I received my lapdesk in the mail. It came in a big cardboard box inside a big gunny sack. There was lots of fill-air packaging inside the cardboard box, so I was surprised to find that the bamboo surface of the lapdesk still had some nicks and scratches on it. Surely this can't be the result of poor packaging - the parcel I received in the mail was almost all made up of packaging materials! I can only surmise that the nicks and scratches must be manufacturing defects, which means that someone isn't paying full attention at the production line.
I was also surprised to find that there was quite a lot of dust and grit in the space in-between the cushion and the bamboo surface of the lapdesk. The cushion is attached to the lapdesk by six velcro strips, and comes with a washing tag that says "SPOT CLEAN ONLY". There wasn't any way to remove the buckwheat hulls from the cushion cover without cutting a new hole in it, but I was convinced that the cushion needed a through wash after discovering that cache of dust and grit. So I sent it into the washing machine on a delicate wash cycle with almost no washing powder and no fabric softener.
After the wash, the buckwheat hulls in the cushion were soaked, and there was no easy way to dry them out. I laid the cushion out on a clothes drying rack and set up a standing fan to air-dry it fast in the shade. Every couple of hours, I would rotate the pillow so that a different side faced the direction of the air blowing from the fan. After about a day, the cushion seemed reasonably dry, and surely it was clean this time!
However, all that washing and drying must have stirred up something inside the cushion. I keep noticing these really tiny insects that occasionally turn up on the surface of the cushion. They're dark reddish-brown in colour and only 1mm or 2mm long. They're barely wider than a coarse human hair, and they crawl around on the surface of the cushion from who-knows-where. I've never seen any creepy-crawlies in my apartment except for the odd spider or moth, so these really tiny ?beetles? must be coming from the inside of the cushion.
I didn't see any of these insects crawling around when I first took the lapdesk out of the box, so I am wondering if all that washing and drying must have caused them to "activate" somehow. What exactly do they feed on, anyway, and how many of them are there in the cushion? The cushion is comfortable and the bamboo surface of the lapdesk is definitely solid to use as a writing surface even though it has nicks and scratches, but am I now supposed to share my lap with a colony of ?beetles??

Large enough for my netbook AND a mousepad! Handle and pocket come in handy, and Cotton hopsack pillow bottom is much more comfortable in your lap than others - especially in warm weather. Looked a long time for a 'better' lapdesk - this is it!

I bought this lap desk for college thinking that it would be a perfect fit, and well I ordered it before reading the other reviews, especially those involving the bug problem. Well surprise, surprise, mine was infested with bugs, and I didn't even have to take it out of the plastic! The overall appearance was okay, but it is not as dark of a wood shown in the picture, and the finish is not flawless either. I am disgusted and there is no way I am keeping a 40$ item that has bugs crawling out of it, so today I am returning it.

I like this desk. The top is larger than most lap desk I looked at and the bamboo makes it lightweight. I like to use it for my laptop and my husband likes to eat from it.
The first one I bought broke in two pieces along a seam of the bamboo. I returned it with the receipt to my local store and it was exchanged no questions asked.
I will probably buy another one sometime in the future so that we don't have to share.

I was happily surprised with the Bamboo Wood Contour Lap Desk I recently purchased from B&N. I was attracted to it immediately -- it looked so much better than the little square plastic bean-bag types available everywhere else. The desk, with a lovely bamboo contoured top and a cool cut out handle is elegant, and thanks to the use of sustainable materials, green. The shape of the desk contours nicely to the body. The bottom pillow is somehow weighted to allow a true balance when placed on the lap. There is absolutely no slipping or sliding of the desk itself or the items placed on it.
I confess my husband and I are people who enjoy dinner in front of the the TV. Nothing we have used in the past ( trays, wicker plate holders and our laps )kept plates, glasses and silverware where we wanted them to stay. This lap desk has been perfect: it is comfortable and has so many uses. The price point can't be beat. It's a good buy!

I received the Bamboo Lap Desk as a Christmas gift and I have found it to be very useful. Many times I study and write while sitting in bed and using this item makes it very easy. The writing surface is large enough for a textbook and notebook and the handle makes this item very portable. I have looked at other lap desks, and this one is by far the nicest one I have seen. This one is much better than the plastic ones sold at other stores. I would recommend this item to other people who want a nice writing and reading surface.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This is my first lap desk and I love it! First of all, I wanted something attractive to look at, as I plan on leaving this in my living room. Next, this is super comfortable on the lap and provides a great surface for my 11.6" netbook/laptop. I get a lot of upper body tension when working on the computer and with this lap desk, I can use my netbook in an ergonomic position. Also, this lap desk is super lightweight, which I love, and it has a little zipper pouch on the top of the pad. The pouch is large enough to hold a couple pens and pencils, highlighter, etc. I would have preferred a different color pad on the underside, but the off-white cotton sack goes well w/ the bamboo top. I was a little hesitant b/c of the $40 price tag, but it's well worth it!

I had been checking out lap desks for some time and passed over many until this one came along. It is just what I was looking for. All natural materials, pleasing shape and design and just the right size and heft for stability and working comfort. I enjoy using it and the solid support it gives me when I have multiple items on the surface.

One of the best little things I've bought in a long time. I use it every day, mostly to rest my laptop computer on. It has a durable surface & had held up very nicely to daily use. It's comfortable and keeps my lap cool. Useful for lots of other things also, writing letters, reading, eating dinner........ Highly recommend and I'll be buying some for gifts to friends.

When I first checked out this product, I was not sure how it would work for me. But the overall shape and design of this lap desk make it the best one I have ever bought. It conforms to you so you do not have sharp edges lodging in your stomach or your legs. It is perfect for homework projects, hobbies or most especially working on the computer. This desk is the perfect size for any project, and the pillow is washable. I love this lap desk and totally recommend it to everyone, even if you don't need it.

My husband was recently wanting to get a lap desk for his laptop computer. It was one of the only things he asked for as a birthday present. We had seen this lap desk and although I think he liked it he seemed to think it was too expensive and was going to opt for a cheaper one. When it came to getting one for him, I went with the idea that I'd get him the one that I'd want someone to get for me. I figured if I liked it he would too, as we have similar tastes. He loves it. And I like it so well that I've either got to get one for myself or steal his!

I had been wanting a lap desk for some time and was excited to receive this one for Valentine's Day. Though I had not personally picked this one out, it is exactly what I've been wanting in a lap desk! I use it every day for both writing and working on my laptop. The bamboo surface is smooth and beautiful, making writing easy and my laptop stays cool on the desk top, as well. The contoured shape of the lap desk and the cotton pillow make using it really comfortable. Don't hesitate to purchase....Wonder how I did without it?!

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I do like the desk--- received as a Christmas gift. Not sure why the pillow removes from the desk--- it is velcroed on the wooden part. You really have to stretch it out to match it up---- it is a little smaller than the velcro pads on the wooden part of the desk.
Over all it is nice, just about $10 over-priced.

I bought mine to use while using my laptop in bed. It works great and doesn't warp from the combination of heat and weight like the plastic lap desks. There has been nothing to complain about.

We got this to replace a lapdesk that had finally worn out. I really like this one, the work area is larger than most, it is very stable, and the contour on the sides makes it very comfortable. So glad my husband bought this for me!

I absolutely love this lap desk. I use it with my laptop constantly. The padding on the underside is extremely comfortable, and the bamboo top is gorgeous and strong. It even keeps my laptop cool! I received mine as a gift from my brother, and I loved it so much that I turned around and bought one for my dad, who in turn is buying one for my mom.
