I got this journal the fall before last, thinking that if I spend a good amount of money on a journal, my mind would be more invested in it. I had a few personal writing projects and i just wanted to keep track of them all, but what I got instead was a real joy for writing just for the sake of writing, and finding that real therapeutic quality to applying your heart to the page. Now,I'm not saying getting one of these will make you a great writer, or make you even like writing, but look at what it is on a practical level, assuming that you are considering.
The paper is extremely smooth, but not glossy, meaning my preferred weapon of choice--a felt-tipped pen--takes to it like a fish to water, which is why I liked it. It's pencil friendly and, if you want, I guess ball point is okay. I've used all in my journal, and there aren't any real problems. I just don't personally like ball-points. The page itself doesn't have that much grip, so you should write lightly. If you use a pen like a crazy person uses something unkind and pointy, you might need paper with a little more grit. Aside from the smoothness, the paper's good for those spills you hope never will happen. I got some iced tea on the open book and it only got the pages it was turned to wet, it didn't bleed through; or at least not in a very considerable amount, and even though it looked like it had tea spilled on it, the journal, structurally, was doing just fine.
the thickness of the thing makes it comfortable to put in a roomy purse or satchel, if you're into that (I've dabbled). Probably not a backpack, though. If it'll be anything like mine. It's not gonna fall apart, but the binding will come out worse for wear in the end. Essentially, it's not a bomb shelter, be nice to it, and either keep it at home for end-of-the-day writing, or keep it in a comfy place, for the sake of the binding.
All in all, this is a very singular journal. I wish the paper came with more styles of covers, but that's what's to be said about beggars. the thing lasted me over a year, and my recently finished journal now holds extreme sentimental value to me. if you are searching for a journal, especially if it's your first time, get this one. it's thirty dollars well spent, but be gentle; it's its first time, too.

This is an absolutely beautiful journal. It feels good in the hand, lays flat when you write and the paper quality is excellent. It is inspiring just to have a journal this beautiful to record thoughts.
