This was a great journal for males and females.I gave four of them to my friends as gifts! The lock is tight and safe so don't loose the key. I would really reccomend it to those picky teens who want their privacy.

I got this journal today in the mail. Mostly happy about it. I have one similar to this in red leather, italian journal with same kind of lock and key on red ribbon. I was very pleased with that purchase, which was also from Barnes and Noble. I purchased this one thinking it would be the exact same, except in black. I was right for the most part. The lock is on a leather cord. I was hoping it would be long enough to tie around my neck. Very wrong. The cord is just long enough to hold your place and stick out a little at the bottom of the journal. The piece of leather from around the lock to the back is a little looser than it should be, but I guess it will be alright. The lock seems very fragile. My three year old cousin broke the lock on my old journal, and that was much sturdier than this lock. I am afraid to let anyone touch the lock. There is a small, but noticeable scratch on the front cover of leather, with two smaller locks surrounding it. The two surrounding the bigger one are not as noticeable as the other one. I am thinking of sending this journal back because of the scratch. On a kid's allowance, this is a big purchase. Other than the fragile lock, the scratches, and the longer edge from the lock to the back of the journal, this is a great diary. I would suggest hiding it out of the reach of young children, as the lock would be broken if they put the key in there and wiggle it around. All in all. a great journal.
