I absolutely adore my Nook HD+!

The Nook HD+ is an e-reader on steroids, packed with features like a stellar HD screen (beats out the Google Nexus, iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD, etc), apps (10000 and counting!), expandable memory, HDMI compatible, 10 hour battery life, and it's one of the lightest 'tablets' on the market. But one thing needs to be clear, the Nook HD+ is an e-reader FIRST, tablet second, and it behaves that way. If you are purchasing this device expecting a full-featured Android OS, look elsewhere.

Lack of apps seems to be a major concern with some buyers, which isn't something that I've been bothered with since I'm not a huge app user. Angry Birds, Evernote, Hulu Plus and Open Explorer are my apps of choice, but it all depends on what YOU plan on using this device for. I can access my e-mail easily and the stock web browser does its job. Don't like the browser? No problem, hit up the app store and get the Dolphin browser or any of the countless other options available.

The Nook HD+ really shines for a few reasons. It's one of the only devices in its class with expandable memory, and due to its 'Retina-like' display, the screen is really super-sharp and the colors pop, perfect for, well, reading. Another reason is customer service. Because Barnes & Noble has actual brick and mortar stores, if you are having problems with your Nook, you don't have to call a customer service number, you can bring your device to your local Barnes & Noble and a Nook specialist is always on staff to help. Also, since it's one of the lightest devices in its class, it's easy and comfortable to hold with one hand. And while some people may say the build (specifically the back of the device) is 'plastic-ey', I find it stylish, plus it keeps it light and separates it from the endless black rectangles that now flood the tablet market.

I'm very happy with my Nook HD+, and those little extra features like being able to take it into a B&N store and be able to read ANY book for free on the device (even items that they don't actually have in stock) is a cool plus. I recommend it for any avid reader who wants a bit of color!

I should confess I initially purchased a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 but, after a day with it, I returned it for a Nook HD+. Large, heavy, and uncomfortable to hold (primarily due to its weight and sharp, narrow edges) the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 has the look and feel of a generic Android tablet with several pre-loaded Amazon applications. I don’t take issue with its multipurpose intentions but my use is that of a colour magazine reader and this device has made few accommodations for those of us who wish to use it for this purpose. I found myself wanting to prop it up on a sturdy table when holding it for less than a minute – it’s that heavy. I really wanted to like the Kindle Fire since I’ve quite an investment in Amazon books but I ultimately returned it in favour of a Nook HD+. The Nook is lighter, more comfortable to hold, has a more pleasing and well thought out user interface, and is less expensive as well. As for books, I will continue to use my e-ink Kindle for reading their purely textual content but magazines require a large, brightly lit LCD colour screen to properly display colour photos and their miscellaneous graphic content. For this purpose, the Nook is clearly a much more focused and polished magazine reader from its paper-like background wallpaper to its comfortable feel and thoughtful home screen additions.

I bought a Nook HD+ today and might end up returning it tomorrow

I bought a Nook HD+ today and might end up returning it tomorrow. The screen is great. No doubt about it. But everything else is not so hot. It's not user-friendly and there aren't many apps available. For me, the worst thing is that you can't create folders to organize your stuff. Well, you can CREATE them, but the Nook doesn't DISPLAY them. This has been problem for a while and they still haven't fixed it. ?!?!?!?!?

They also advertise the HD+ as being GREAT FOR FAMILIES because you can set up different users. So your spouse or kids can have their own accounts and their own books. I thought this would help because of the no-folders thing. Well, my daughter wanted an original Nancy Drew book (#8 in the series). Fine. But it didn't appear search results when we searched in her account. But it DID show up when we searched on my account. ?? Someone flagged most of the older Nancy Drew books as being adult content. Okay, fine. I removed the "kids only" restriction in her account. It STILL didn't appear in the search results. I called the store. They told me to just make an adult account for her. Err. This kind of defeats the purpose of setting up an account that will suggest the kinds of books she likes to read. Not to mention if she's an "adult" they can collect all her information aggressively.

And when I read the ten-page privacy policy, it said that they collect information on kids under 13, "so you should tell your kids not to write anything personally identifiable if they're using our online apps." Eek!

And don't even get me started on some ebooks being more expensive than actual books.

      Love it!!

This size screen is perfect for everything!! Watching movies, reading books, and playing games. Wacthing movies on this HD screen makes everything look like its coming out of the screen! What's even is even though it is an HD screen, i can still read books for hours and my eyes never get tired. A must have for all book lovers!

The Nook OS version is 2.02.

      My Review:

      Hardware: 8

Pro - nice overall hardware with great screen

Cons - proprietary data/HDMI port, wait for HDMI cables with hope of simultaneous charging, no duel band Wifi, Battery non-removable

      Software: 2

Android OS is not 4.1 & no access to task manger, no DLNA, DIVX or SD Card MKV HD support. Browser SUCKs whatever it is, no Flash, no JAVA, and likes to freeze and not load sites that's not cookie friendly.

      Freezing occurs after sleeping.

Multiple times the web browser has crashed and the only option is to restart the NOOK. Browser has no copy/paste/cut.

Cons - no store Apps or good software available yet. This tablet has no purpose other than an expensive Ereader with that its average.

The PDF Ereader also cuts a minimum of 1 & 1/2 inches off the screen. No full screen!

      PDF EReader: 5

This priduct is excillent. In fact I am writing this review on one. As far as use, it is very handy and although it is large ir is still quite portable. Will need to carry a slightly larger purse for this one ladies. Movies are viewed with spectactular quality and reading is easy. Adjust your brightness setting for day/night use and you are golden. Sunglare? Not an issue, magic, almost. Gaming can be slightly akward due to the size but gamers always seem to make due anyway. All in all, fantastic. Grade on battery life A++. Kudos BN, great product.

      A wonderful tablet

I have had my nook hd+ for 2 weeks and it has been wonderful. It was very easy to set up. The battery last longer then they said it would and i am a very heavy reader so it was very important to me that i didn't need to charge it every night. I had a nook color and this tablet had been a upgrade in every way.

HD+ is a solid 4 star improvement over previous NC and NT. The lack of quality apps is the only reason this doesn't get a 5-star. I had NC and NT before, this is a faster, sharper screen, more responsive, and overall, just a better tablet for most daily email and web usage...plus some reading and movies. I got the 32GB model, BN got it right this time without locking down internal storage.

      > How's the web browsing?

It worked well enough for me, but I only use it for light web browsing. You didn't ask, but regarding Adobe Flash support there is Adobe Flash 11.2.x for Android available in the shop, but it's not the latest in that series and suffers from security vulnerabilities. I'm hoping that B&N get the latest in that series pretty soon. The web browser itself reminded me of Chrome in some ways (not surprisingly since Google is involved), and browsing was at least as snappy as an iPhone 4.

Regarding bugs, I've found several and have reported them all in the hopes that B&N will roll out updates soon to fix them. I'm hoping that others will do the same.

This is an incredible device! I love it. The screen size is excellent for my magazines and web browsing. I use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard from Logitech with it along with Splashtop remote desktop software and have full control of my office computer from anywhere. Tried several tablets prior to the Nook HD+ but like this the best.

Think of the HD+ as a great media display tablet, not as a general purpose tablet. If you who want to read books and magazines, watch movies, play an occasional game and listen to music, the Nook HD+ is the best deal out there.

I compared my wife’s HD+ to supposedly the best display out there, the Apple iPad retina display. I found the clarity, contrast and colors about the same, but the HD+ has a much wider viewing angle. Netflix runs at the highest resolution, though it takes about 15 seconds to focus. It has every app I want in a tablet except Pandora, and I have read Pandora is working on it. Sound is excellent through headphones, though the speakers leave a lot to be desired. Browsing speed is adequate.

If you are the kind of person who would actually use hundreds of apps on their tablet, then this is not the way to go. But if you are like me and plan on using your smartphone for basic apps such as GPS and a camera, and only use 15-25 apps on your tablet, this is a cheap way to do all the things you don’t like to on your smart phone since it is too small.

BTW – I have decided to get one for myself. I also compared my wife's HD+ to the Microsoft Surface tablet, which I originally wanted to purchase, and found the Surface tablet sometimes lacked the clarity of the HD+ (Though I was surprised at how well the TrueType technology did work, it did not work well often enough to use it as a reader). And I have decided I cannot justify over $200 more to get an Android tablet with a somewhat comparable screen when the HD+ does 98% of what I want it to do.

P.S. The complaint about the lack of support for Adobe Flash is ridiculous. Apple does not support it and Adobe is stopping support on the newest versions of Android.

Adding items to a shelf from a search
Unable to restrict kids while browsing (the other kids setup is great)

I have both the nook Hd and HD plus, i find both are great. I use them mostly for books, magazines and netflix which they work great for. I did have a problem with the first nook hd i bought, it had a grey line going down the left side of the screen from top to bottom, but i took it back and got a new one which does not have the problem. Its great for my occasional google searches too. I would recomend this device to anyone who loves to read. The HD plus is better for magazines and catalogs but the nook HD is better if you like to take your reading on the go, as it is more purse freindly.

I Really loved my Nook Color. But my Nook HD+ (32g) is soo much

I Really loved my Nook Color. But my Nook HD+ (32g) is soo much better. I truely love it and would recommend it to everyone! I love reading on it, the games resultion are amazing. It's alos a lot of fun to which back and forth between my 2 Nooks while reading book and haveing it automatically sync to the right page for me; than It brings a whole new dimension to angry brids or call of Alantis. I haven't watched a movie on my own yet but th ones I saw in the store were awesome. I've never seen a catalog work quite this way before either. So I love my Nook HD+ and have filled it with an mirco sdhd (32) card so i am pretty good to go and ago and go. Now I just need to cover I'm waiting on to actually hit the stores. Good Job Nook!

I purchased the product with the intention of reading textbooks.

I purchased the product with the intention of reading textbooks. However, textbooks cannot be purchased through the "shop". Renting a movie costs between $3.99 and $5.99 in order to be disappointed by the sound quality. Screen resolution is acceptable, but the speaker system is inferior to the one in an Apple i-phone 5. Wi-fi connectivity is also unreliable. The system fails to connect to the wi-fi, while the iphone 5 is connected and functioning. Further, the CSC representatives are not qualified to perform their simple duties. I am extremely disappointed with my purchase for the reasons stated. Consequently, the tablet is completely useless and B&N lost my business permanently.

It appears that this table is made for anything but the web browsing. How can it be so bad at one of the most important function that tablets are supposed to do (i.e. browsing). It is only when you try other tablets you realize that how good the iPad is. Sorry folks, this tablet didn't work out for me and I had to return it in just 3 days.
