Like several others giving reviews, I have had the exact same problem, with a small "tear" showing up in the back of the screen allowing light to leach through when using the Glow Light. Like others, I have taken exceptional care with the unit and it certainly wasn't abused. It's almost brand new, and my experience with other Nook products (I have owned them all) has been positive and I have purchased about $1,000 in Nook Books in the last year. I took it back to the store, with the receipt, box and everything else it came with, to get a replacement, believing that there would be no problem. First, the store didn't have any in stock, so they couldn't replace it. Then the representative dialed, what apparently is their call center and handed me the phone to deal with him. To say this guy was rude would be a vast understatement. Then he demanded that I give him my credit card information (which of course they already have. How else to they think I buy books?) and told me that it had to be returned to them within 14 days (again, I was standing at the Nook Counter in the store and was leaving it with them to send in, so had no way of controlling how long it took them to send it back to their own support) and then said that if they determined that I was the one that cracked the screen, they would charge my credit card for a new one. Wait, didn't I say several times the screen wasn't cracked, it had a tear from UNDER the screen? To give him credit, he WAS reading from a script, so I guess if that's all you have to go by, that's the kind of answers you get. When I asked questions he became quite agitated and simply reread from the script.
The bottom line is that I spend a lot of money with Barnes and Noble and until this problem had never returned anything to them in my life. My first experience with trying to return something that has the exact same problem as others have talked about here, was met with somebody reading from a script, demanding my credit card and acting like I must have driven over the Nook with my car and expected them to give me a new one.
I left the unit on the counter, with the receipt, and told them to throw it in the trash and walked out. I have talked several other people into buying the Nook instead of the Kindle, but those days are done. Guess I too, like others here, are out $140, but I don't mind paying for good lessons. The lesson is that people go to Barnes and Noble for the product. They leave because of the total lack of support for that product

The GlowLight is a wonderful concept and the screen is fantastic for night readers. I received my Nook with GlowLight as a Mother's Day gift and I was in love with it for 13 days. Until one evening I turned on the GlowLight and saw a strange GLOWING HOLE in the middle of the screen. The light appeared to be leaking out of the screen and was a glaring distraction from any reading. I had been carrying the Nook in a padded protective case and it had never been dropped, thrown or in any other way abused. I was baffled as to how the screen got damaged. B&N only allows returns within 14 days, so back to the store I went to exchange my defective model. However, none of my local stores have these in stock and nobody knew when they would get more in. Since they couldn't exchange it, and I couldn't wait until they got more in stock because of the 14 day return policy, I was forced to do a full return and B&N lost my business.

I loved my Simple Touch with Glow Light until it developed a "hole" in the screen. Like a previous writer, I had treated my Nook with care. I turned on the Glow Light last night and there was a "tear" between the screen and the light. I don't know how it happened. I returned the product for my money back. Hopefully they can fix this problem.... :(

Gave this review earlier, but somehow, my 1 star turned into a 4 star and I can't edit it. Loved the Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light... for three days. Then the screen froze up similar to the 1st gen that I had replaced multiple times for the same reason. Have since purchased a Nook Color, Nook Tablet, and Nook Simple Touch for family memembers and bought this new one for my daughters birthday. What made it especially bad is that when I contacted customer service, they agreed to send me a replacement (after I gave them a credit card), but a little over a week later, they canceled my order. Well, of course, after that amount of time, the 14 day return period was over, and I couldn't get a refund. After 2 months, countless emails, phone calls, and online chat sessions, I still do not have a replacement. I am however, out $140. Guess I'm going to write it off and try a Kindle.

Having read about serious issues, what is B & N doing about the glowlight issue? I have yet to see a response to the myriad of complaints.
I think I'll hold off purchasing!

I didn't think it was possible to be any happier than I was with my Simple Touch. Truly, all I wanted was to "Read Forever." I never thought about a light. After all, anyplace I could read a real book, I could read my Simple Touch. Yes, I kept the light low if I read while my husband was sleeping, and yes, there were places too dark for reading, but I didn't question them. Until the SoftGlow came out. Then I knew at once I had to have one. I've had it now four days, and it makes a wonderful thing even more wonderful. The light is perfect—easy on your eyes, easy to use, and, frankly, since you don't use it all the time, the effect on the battery is a non issue.
I waffled over buying an eReader for probably two years, not wanting to give into a technology that could diminish the importance of real books in our culture. I've been a serious reader all my life, loving all the usual things about actual books. But I also realized the positive things a simple, small device that allowed you to carry as many books as you could want around in your purse or pocket could offer. It was Stephen King who tipped the scales. He said two things. One was "Technology is a river, and it's better to swim with it than against it." The other was that a book, an audio tape, or an eReader is only the delivery system; it's the story that matters. After that I was only two days from my B&N store and one of the best purchases I've ever made. The Simple Touch was everything I wanted it to be—and more. The pleasure of holding and using it was completely unexpected. The staff at B&N is been wonderful, and I read even more than I did before. And BTW, I still buy real books, too. There are many I want to own in hardcover and keep on my shelves.
It's nice to swim with the river.

I guess I am not alone with the problem of the tear that appeared on the screen! I handled my Nook with the utmost of care but it is definitely defective. A new Nook is on its way and I will be sending the defective one back. I so hope it doesn't happen again. If it does, back it will go!

This is my third nook. The glow should be the "perfect" combination. However, I, too, have had the bright hole/slit at the bottom of my screen (1 1/2inch from bottom and 3/4 inch from side). This happened with the first glow I received so they sent me a replacement. And, now, it has happened with the replacement. Customer service has been great and will send another one. Either of these nooks have not been dropped, punctured, etc. and have been kept in a protective case since I had them. There is evidently a problem in the manufacturing/material that is used. I hope they solve this problem because I plan to not give up on it

CONFESSIONS OF A KINDLE READER.... I've been through all versions of the Kindle including the latest Touch and Fire models but when I saw this Nook I just knew this was the ultimate ebook reader and I was right. Far easier to hold then the Kindle models & perfect lighting for bedtime reading. I like the lighter background instead of Kindle's greenish background. Battery life is excellent, the indentation in the back fits the fingers and the wide bezels fits my big thumbs. I couldn't be happier!

DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR MONEY The reader is great! When is rooted!!! The
light (glow) is amazing, until develops a "hole*" (less than a
month). If you are thinking to buy a ereader WAIT. The nook's glow looks
and works great but it is extremly fragile. DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR MONEY,
the glowlight cost is arround $40 extra and it would be useless in less
than one month. The NooK simpletouch (without glow) is a better option,
or even better buy a Sony's T1 or a Kindle, if you want a ereader with
light maybe you can wait, THERE IS A KINDLE WITH LIGHT that is will be
available soon, you may wanna wait... *it not a real hole, is a place
where the light escapes... ps: the B&N costumer atention is
f@c/&·$*n s#*t... they will blame you, if screen of your nook has a
"hole"... Even when a lot of people has the same problem. You

After having a NOOK First Edition for quite awhile, I decided to upgrade to a NOOK Simple Touch this past March. Of course with my luck, after the 14 trial period ended, B&N announced the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight. I happen to be a very frugal person, so I have been contemplating for weeks whether I could justify buying another NOOK so soon.
My main reason for wanting the GlowLight is because I have to have a light with my NOOK so that I can read in bed without disturbing my husband. For both my First Edition and my Simple Touch, I purchased a M-edge executive jacket with the optional light. Don't get me wrong, the M-edge product is a high quality product. However, there are two things I do not like about it. First, because it has to accommodate both the light and the NOOK, the case ends up being bigger than the NOOK itself. Since the main reason I upgraded to the Simple Touch was to have something smaller and more portable than the First Edition, this isn't ideal. Also, the way the M-edge light is designed, even when it is pointed directly at the screen, you can still see the light from the side; it really isn't pleasant to have a light shine in your eyes when you are trying to read, no matter how small it is.
So, last night I caved and decided to pick up a Glowlight. Can I just say OMG, I'm impressed! You can't really understand how great it is just by looking at it at a B&N store (I don't know why they don't have a special set-up so you can view it in-store, away from the bright lights of the store). I was amazed as soon as I tried it out at home. How they get those little lights to work is beyond me, especially considering the way they are hidden in such a tiny place. Other than the very outside edge being a different color than the original Simple Touch, you would never be able to tell the difference between the two just by looking at them.
The only thing I have noticed, after using it last night, is that it seems to be a little less sensitive to my touch. It may be my imagination, but the screen feels different, like maybe it's made of a different material in order to work with the lights. I really don't know, but I don't foresee this being a problem at all because I only use the side buttons to scroll through pages anyway. Actually, the side buttons are the main reason why I have stuck with a NOOK rather than going with the Kindle Touch; I cannot live without the side buttons and I hope B&N never gets rid of them!
My only other complaint would be that I still don't understand why, when you get a new NOOK and log into your existing account, your shelves cannot carry over. This is the third time now that I have had to re-shelve my books, and its kind of annoying. But, I suppose I can live with this. I still highly recommend NOOKS to anyone!

I received my first Nook with GlowLight and right away, I loved it. Until, just a few weeks in, the pages would not flip all the way. Each time I would flip the page, it would leave an outline of the previous pages' text. It was not just a minor problem - I could not even read the new page. I called the 1 800 number, and they immediately sent out a brand new Nook with GlowLight to me. That one worked fine until it developed one of the infamous holes. Like others, I kept mine in a case and was very careful with it. Again, I called the 1 800 number, and again, they sent me a brand new Nook with GlowLight. Within 2 weeks of having my third new Nook with GlowLight, it also developed a hole. That time, I just returned it to the store.

Has to be one of the worst dedicated e-readers to get borrowed library books onto. No "Send To" email support like kindle and unless you buy the book from Barnes & Noble there in no way to get the book to the nook without using Adobe Digital Additions. It would be nice if you could archive pdf and borrowed library books just so you could use that feature to wirelessly send items to the nook. For the horrific user interface and getting books to the device, the glow light and ergonomics are great.

Brand loyalty (B&N) and good enough feedback were all I needed to commit my heart and my dollars to Nook with GlowLight... Ah, unrequited love... I charged it and we had a heady first three weeks and I couldn't rave enough. I loved it. I even thought to myself at one point, "Hey, don't I have to recharge this thing?" It was downhill after that. It wouldn't hold a charge, at one point lasting only one day. Then the next time, only a couple of days. I was used to three weeks! My expectations had been set! Even the manual says it can last up to 3 weeks with the energy saving steps. Customer service on two occasions walked me through steps to try to fix this inconsistency. Finally, I decided I wanted a replacement... The customer service people (up to now) were excellent and at the third call readily agreed to send me a replacement.
A few days later the B&N box arrived and I opened it to find my new Nook. I had every hope that we could have a new start, a reboot for the future, as it were... Then I saw it. A BIG UGLY IN YOUR FACE STICKER THAT SAID: "CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED." My reaction -- I went ballistic, postal, Alan Rickman, psychotic. I felt betrayed, enraged, oppressed and confused. MY B&N did this to me??? I called the customer service people and was told that I agreed to the conditions and it clearly states that this would be possible, a replacement that was certified pre-owned. (I immediately thought of the South Park episode and screamed at the poor fellow - "You have human centiped-ed me!" and in truth, I don't believe he understood what I meant.)
In any event, after another two attempts (at one of which someone really, really said that there was nothing he or his supervisor could do...) I found a supervisor who sent me a new Nook. Now this new Nook is more consistent. From the onset, the charge has only lasted around 3 days. I have no expectations. Even though the manual taunts me that I should have more...I will, now, settle for less...
What is the result of this experience? For me, the B&N brand is completely tarnished. I am a consumer who now thinks a lot less of this company at a time that they are in hot competition to capture the market. Either the manual (and many postings) are lies (re: the 3 week business) or the Nooks are so inconsistent in their quality that many of us do not experience the 3 week usage. Neither option is a good one for B&N. And that business about pre-owned? That is the vilest mis-service that can be perpetrated on a consumer. Once I can get Office for an IPad (which we hope will come this November...) I'll put the Nook away altogether. I'm sticking to Apple products.

I have owned a few e-readers in the past (PRS505, PRS350, Kindle 2nd Gen, and Kindle 3rd Gen) so I guess I could say I have some experience with e-readers. Some of these e-readers were good and others were better but they all had one thing in common; the lack of the ability of reading in a dark place. When I first heard of the Nook with GlowLight I was a bit skeptical about it because I thought the light was going to interfere with the reading experience just like an LCD screen does. Well, I'm happy to tell you that GlowLight does a superb job. The light is soft very gently on the eyes. You can read for hours - as I have -with GlowLight on and it will not bother you on the least. I own an iPad and although the page turning animations are great and all, the backlight it's an annoyance when it comes to reading long periods of time; my eyes would start to hurt within twenty minutes even with the brightness setting on low. Well, all I can say is tat the new Nook with GlowLight isamazing; I couldn't be happier.

I love the glo light and that it is adjustable. It does take a long time to start up. The touch screen often takes two or three touches before the page turns

I've tried all the latest e-readers (Amazon's Kindle touch, $79 version, Keyboard, Fire and BN's Nook tablet and Simple Touch). The only one I've kept is the Kindle with keyboard so when I bought the Nook with Glowlight I figured I would give it a try and then return or resell it and go back to my kindle (maybe when Amazon comes out with their own backlight version.) But what a surprise, the more I use my Nook w/ GL the more I like it!
The Glowlight makes a HUGE difference. Even in a well-lit room,I leave the glowlight on. It makes the page look almost white (unlike the usual e-reader gray or green) and unlike my Ipad, I experience NO eye strain even when reading for hours at a time.
I was a bit concerned about the touch screen. Both the Kindle touch and the Nook Simple Touch were a bit distracting in that when I would touch the screen to turn the page, it wouldn't register my touch so I would touch it again and then it would jump ahead a few pages. The Glowlight Nook reading experience is very smooth and it lets you forget you are even reading on a device instead of a book.
It is very light weight and fits nicely in my hand whether on a plane or lying in bed and even with the extra cover installed, it is extremely portable. I love the look and feel. Great design!
I wish it had 3G so I wouldn't have to bug friends for their wireless passwords and in an airport, my iphone connected to the wifi just fine but my nook was unable to connect - I think because you have to open a browser window (which the nook lacks) to accept the user agreement.
The homepage is a little klunky with a section devoted to sales suggestions and other wastes of space. I like that the Kindle just has a list of my books and only calls up the store interface when I want to shop.
Navigation is just okay. The little buttons (such as the one I press to go to my library) are very tiny and I usually have to press them a few times.
File management is a little frustrating. You can't delete anything you've side-loaded which leaves the library very cluttered. I like the idea of the book shelves but I don't use them very often.
Overall, those negatives are just a small part of my Nook usage. By and large, the glowlight reading experience is excellent and that alone earns it 4 stars! Nice job BN!

I purchased my device three days ago, and the first book I purchased was "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, which I read in one sitting the first night with the device, ensuring to test and take advantage of the infamous lighting feature. I am now reading "The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglas." The device is fantastic; I feel like I can free myself from paperbacks, despite my fetish for smelling the aroma of paper. The "GlowLight" feature does not strain my eyes. I had the iPad, and if I may say, despite the technological advances of such device, it is not for reading.
Unfortunately, while I am happy with the device, it is not perfect. The highlighting feature is sometimes unresponsive. One of the several reasons why I bought the Nook is that I cannot write notes and highlight pages in paperbacks: I just can't. In Nook, when I want to highlight a sentence that runs until the next page, I often have to change the settings until I can see the whole sentence in one page. Other than that, I have no further complaints.
By the way, there's no Facebook or web browser embedded in the device, which are two features I don't need. I have my phone or laptop for that. At any rate, it really keeps me focus ; if the task is to read, the device should aid the reader in doing so, which it does perfectly. With this device, I am confident that I will achieve my goals: to read at least three classics every month.

I am so in love with the Simple Touch with GlowLight!! It's my first Nook and eReader and I couldn't be happier. Fast page turns, crisp text and the perfect amount of light so you can truly read anywhere! Love it! Definitely recommended!
