    more from this reviewer

    Over priced

This chess set is more about novelty than anything else. As already mentioned in the other review, the pieces are crafted to represent the authors quite well. However, the material used is not stone, or granite, or marble, or alabaster, or any other such sturdy material one might expect for such a price. A cursory look around the internet at other chess sets shows that similarly priced chess sets offer better construction materials (such as the materials I listed and more.) The game board is also not any fancy style of wood, and is most likely poplar (cheap wood). The squares on the board are a vinyl looking overlay that is merely glued to the surface of the wood. Essentially, this set is overpriced for what you're getting. But, if having a chess set of famous authors is worth the price to you in and of itself, then knock yourself out.

A very deep rich tone color for the box. Some of the pieces were too simular in size and likeness. The "leather" square inlay on the board surface was curled up at the edges making it look very cheap. Even with the discount I would not buy

Bought the chess board for my son. He was confused as to where the chess pieces went because they were too simular in size and style. The box has a very deep rich color however the playing surface (leather?) has peeled up around the edges making it appear very cheaply made. For the amount of money I spent including the discount I probably would not buy this item again or recommend it to others.

    Nice, but flawed.

Like one reviewer, I was also put off by the faux leather inlay that wasn't glued down securely, and agree that the pieces are too similar looking. More variation in size would have helped. And I'd quarrel with the inclusion of Longfellow over Hawthorne or Melville. Otherwise, it's a great set.

    Beautiful!

I bought this as a gift for a colleague - and it was a huge hit. He is an avid reader and was blown away by the detail and quality. I highly recommend it!

Whoever made this did a fabulous job at the detail of the pieces. Very impressive.
